Here are some pictures of that box of 14 boxes of Akai cassettes I ordered from B&B.

That is pretty silly, but I shouldn't talk since I have about 12 boxes of them sitting around.

You got me beat on those since I currently only have 7 boxes of the SX and 3 boxes of the GX.

so you guys are absolutely sure of those tapes quality, huh? while i don't do enough taping anymore to justify keeping blank stocks like that, i am always game for high quality vintage tapes, and i'm waiting for that lucky THRIFT WORLD MA-XG find...

so you guys are absolutely sure of those tapes quality, huh? I sure am. You see the different tapes that I've bought the past few months and the sound quality vs price (80¢ each) on my Nak CR-5A's is outstanding.
and i'm waiting for that lucky THRIFT WORLD MA-XG find... Me too. But I've got to the point that the with time and gas money I have invested into the thrifts... I could have paid the guy his 3500% mark up on fleabay.... and have some change left. Just my *twocents*

Well in light of the testing and evaluation I did on these tapes yesterday, I don't think I'll be using them for anything anytime soon. Now I am stuck with four cartons of them-two of each kind.
Great.

While I don't have these exact tapes, (are these type I's?) I didn't get any acceptable results on the Nak other than pleasant background music, to listen to while typin' on this here machine, I'm not flaming type I's folks, they're just not for me, for now, I've tried various II's this weekend, and a step up for me sound wise, still background music, I'm just a snob I guess, and I don't know everything, not by a long shot *fm* firmly, I'll stand corrected at a later date maybe. I'm not tappin' my foot when it's not in my mouth at this time, I'm eagerly awaiting the Blackwatch Metals!!
I like what I hear on the lower grades for what they're worth, champane tastes on a beer budget talkin'.......I'll take my whippin' now, Thank You Sir! May I have another!!

The concenceous seems to be that it depends on what deck you use & if you use NR or not as to whether the Akai tapes "suck" or not. I haven't had any issues with them & others have also found them to be pretty good tapes, while others, like Des, have found them less than ideal on the decks they use.

I guess I need to experiment more then. I haven't tried all the different ways yet. I have alot to learn, all over again. And on a new to me deck to boot. My previous post as I said, may be premature. Any "Tricks" I could use on biasing these, I understand and can hear saturation.

The recipe that seems to work great on my NAD 613 with the Akai SX tapes is to set the bias at about -1.5 while recording & playing back with Dolby C. That configuration makes those tapes sound fantastic & has worked very well for me, not only with the Akai SX, but the Fuji DR-I as well. With type II tapes, I'll set the bias @ 0 to -1.2, depending on the tape. I've had good results with the Akai GX as well on my NAD.

Lower the record levels a bit, instead of a +5 max try a +3.

My NAD 613's owner's manual recomends +4 & that seems to work quite well.

It means that my stash of Akai's will either end up in the garbage or as giveaways to a future Name Those Tunes contest.
You can probably infer my feelings towards them from that.
PS: I'm kind of in a bad mood right now. I doubt I'll actually toss them. But they will definitely not be used for music. Not when I have all of that fine Maxell and Denon premium NOS at my disposal.
