View Full Version : Revox A77--channel II messed up?

Hey all,

I'm a newbie all-around--new to the forum and not much of a techie. Bear with me and feel free to make fun of me.

I recently started messing around with a Revox A77 that I inherited years ago. I'm running a line of electronics into the RCA input Channel I (on the back) and a mic into the mic input Channel II (on the front) and doing some live tape looping. I'm running one line out from the Output I on the back into a mixer, with the monitor panned all the way to the left.

Channel I works fine, but Channel II is all goofy. With the red record lock button depressed, I can hear the signal, but it is very faint and distorted, and it plays back the same way. If the Channel I record lock is depressed and I release the Channel II lock, the signal going into Channel II explodes into the monitor. Earlier today, this was not happening. The volume discrepancy between the two channels is very, very extreme. For instance, I can record onto the loop from Channel I with the monitor on "Tape" and hear it (for a cool delay from my dry signal). Channel II is totally silent unless I set the monitor to "Input," where it is normal.

The tape is threaded normally. Some of the pots are dirty, but I don't see why they would be causing this. Please, if anyone knows what's up, let me know. I'm sure it's something very stupid.

Thanks!
Trevor

Bad capacitor(s)?

*Hi5*Welcome. I'd only make fun of you if you said "bare with me"

Look at the clear dials that function as an input selector. One is probably in the I-II or II-I position. The goofy thing about the A 77 is the meters don't show play levels, so it may be that the play level is turned way down?

Nah, they're definitely in the Aux and Mic positions respectively. Channel II's Aux input has got the same deal. Very weird.

channel 2 is not recording. Try doing a normal stereo recording. The mic pre may have a problem.

Would a problem with the mic pre affect the aux input as well? If that's what it is, what can I do about it? I might just take it to an electronics shop.
