Tape is certainly not dead as a data medium, and it sounds like the next plateau that IBM engineers are shooting for is 100 giga-bits/sq inch - which is phenomenal. 35 tera-bytes in one tape cartridge, is mind blowing all on it's own. Tripling that on the next iteration is staggering...

As far as magnetic tape as a mass-marketed audio/video consumer medium, fuggetaboutit, that's been dead with the advent of digital audio/video and compressed file format transportability.
