Picked up a number of blanks from various sources in the last few weeks, some familiar others not, such as Konica and JVC, but opted to take the plunge with them all the same, given the price hike and increasing rarity of my preferred choices.

It's intriguing and encouraging what's out there when you have the time to look.

01. Agfa C-DX II S 90
02. BASF FECR III 90
03. Denon HG-M 90
04. Fuji GT-1 90

07. JVC FI 60
08. Maxell MX 90
09. Pioneer C1 90
10. TDK SA-X 90

Yes, single copies only - mostly found on the German Ebay site.

Stuart, I'm *ill* with envy, jealous! I remember using the Konica's way back on the SAE, never could get them dialed in right with the bias. All decks differ in this aspect, you may like it, I haven't seen one in years, have fun!

Wow. I've been looking for that JVC metal tape and here you find one! I have yet to see one on Ebay. I'd also like a copy of that HG-M type II tape and the Sony Metallic. Boy you got a good score there.

Wow - great collection from Germany, well done. Ditto with Braxus - that JVC ME is to murder for. But all good - the FI and FIS, also good type ones from JVC. All Pioneers are rare - very nice too. The Denon MG-X is an obvious beaut. Well done.

Got it. I bid on the one that will ship worldwide. Hopefully someone on here won't outbid me.

I find it strange how they can list to ship worldwide, but their auctions don't show up on other Ebay sights like North America. That German site seems to have a goldmine in there. I hope to win that JVC tape.

Did anyone from TH buy that brand-new 10ct. box of Fuji 60 minute metal cassettes some guy was selling last week? I think the bid was at around $60 last time I saw it.

Stuart,

That tip of yours paid off. I won 3 tapes of which I was looking for from Ebay Germany. Only problem was one wanted a money transfer of which I've never done before. He has 100% feedback of 300, so I assume he's safe. Here's a pic of the tapes I won. Thanks again.

Glad you got what you were looking for, I think you'll be fine with the money transfer, for some strange reason (known only to themselves) certain sellers in Germany don't utilise Paypal or Bidpay.

Some of them will accept Paypal even if it's not stated, money transfers are expensive and protracted from the UK - I've sent cash Euros via International Recorded and, as yet, haven't been ripped off.

All the cassettes I've bought from Germany so far are of excellent quality, and it seems presently to be a healthily stocked market.

Look east young man!

Yes I bid on that auction without realizing he didn't take PayPal. My oops. I gave him a second email to see if he'll take PayPal or an international money order.

Funny how for that JVC tape that the 60 minute tape ended up higher in the bids then the 90 minute one I also bid on. And the 60 minute guy is the one you have to pay extra for the money transfer.

braxus

The seller got a hold of me and he wants a bank credit transfer to his account for that tape. I found out just to do such a transfer, its going to cost me $35-35 dollars in fees plus the money I need to send him for it. That works out to $70 for 1 tape worth $15. How did I ever get sucked into that one by this seller? I asked if I could withdraw if he won't take any other option.

08-04-2008, 03:50 PM
Paypal would much easier.
Somehow some Germans believe that free tranfers from bank accounts is an international phenomena. I explaned some (before auctions ended) and luckily they set up a Paypal account. Cash in envelope can be another (not too safe) option.

braxus
08-04-2008, 05:01 PM
I already asked the guy and he said he will only accept a bank transfer. I already asked if he could do PayPal or other sources. I sent a second email asking if I could back down if he won't accept anything else.

This is what I've managed to find recently at relatively good cost with a few freebies thrown in, courtesy of the sellers.

I've mentioned Tapeheads by way of introduction and when using Paypal - seems to have done the trick!

02. BASF TP II Reference Maxima 90
03. BASF Chrome Super II 100 (dealer freebie)
04. BASF Master Chrome Super II 60
05. Denon HD8 100
06. Fuji FR-IS 90 (big thanks to Scott for these)
07. Fuji K2 60 (dealer upgrade)
08. Konica GM-1 90
09. Maxell Metal Capsule 50
10. Sony UX Master 90
11. Sony ES-IV 60
12. TDK SA-XG 90

Well, it's been a busy old month on the cassette trail. Most exciting of all though was to receive a package from Joel (Dr.Bo) from the US. This was from a trade we agreed on some of my old Fujis. Joel put together a selection of tapes that he wasn't 100% confident at offering on eBay, mainly because they had some minor cosmetic issues with the wrappers or, in the case of the really old ones, the wraps were beginning to come apart. As I intend on using many of them, it didn't matter to me too much. Having said that, on inspection many of the tapes look absolutely perfect, certainly as good as the vast majority of tapes that have left the safety of their original boxes. It's a really interesting bunch of tapes, esepecially the BASFs and the Scotch in the larger than normal library boxes. The Marantz Metal tapes are also fascinating and something I've never seen before.

A bonus was the inclusion of a mint 1982 TDK AD-X, which fills a gap in my 1982 TDK collection. Also, an AD C60 although I'm still really wanting an AD C90...

So a big thanks to Joel!

And now, for your delectation....

Well I've always been bummed I never seem to find those sweet deals people pick up on and find. Like a MX metal tape for $2 or something like that. Anyway I was at work on a lunch and decided to go to the dollar store. Been in there many times and never saw anything interesting other then really low grade tapes. But I persisted and went to the electronics isle. Often they have different cassettes in there, with no consistency in what they get in. This time I hit the motherload. They had 15 Maxell XL-IIS 60 minute tapes in there! So I grabbed every one of them and went to the counter. I initially didn't see a price on them, so I asked the lady at the counter how much for each one. She said $1 dollar each. I said like a good tapehead- "I'll take them". She rang me up for $15 plus taxes. We even got to talking about how often she sees people buying cassettes and she says there's still quite a few in town. Anyway I was so happy I finally found a smoking deal for once. I guess its from all these years of paying current value on Ebay tapes. I got home and some of the tapes were marked with prices on them which we didn't see earlier. They said $1.50 each tape. Oops. So I called the store and explained I was undercharged. I went back to the store and talked to the lady I got them from. She thought I was buying more tapes, but I had to explain what happened earlier. Anyway she figured it all out and she rang me through for the amount I missed on the last payment. So I got these tapes for $22.50 total. Still a great deal for a XL-IIS tape. Its the last version which I know isn't as good, but who cares. Its a premium chrome tape. I can finally rest now that I ran into at least one good deal for some old NOS blanks.

I'd found great deals the last one ,when I moved here went to small music store and I found 6 TDK MA-XG FERMO ,I asked how much for these 6 tapes the owner told me "90 pesos" which was 9 USA dollars back when the rate exchange was 1:10 ( one dollar= ten pesos) now is 1:15.
Also when I lived in USA I went to an audio-video warehouse in Orange CA and they still have hundreds of tapes TDK SA.SA-X,MA,MA-X,MA-XG,D,AD,and ask them what price they gave me if I buy them all. they sold me $0.70 each . $0.81 a tape and the lowest end tape is an XLII, damn that is a good deal! I think 100 is a good length too.

Great, thanks! I like 90-100's the best also. And I have a good bulk eraser!! *headtunes*

Well, it's been a pretty "metal-tastic" month here with a real feast of different Metal tapes coming my way, with many thanks to Dr. Bo of this parish. I've pictured them on another thread.

However, there has also been quite an influx of TDK metals, both old and newer MAs, a 1982 MA and MA-R, a bunch of 1988 MA-Xs, some boxes of MA-XG (yum!), a bunch of Maxell Metals, old and new, some original Sony Metal-ES, and last but not least, today's arrival, some BASF Metal Maxima TP IVs...

Richard,

I have't seen that many BASF TP IV Maximas.....ever. Really, you ought to be ashamed, if you hadn't placed a single cassette at the front I'd think I'm looking at an optical illusion.

Let us know what your impressions are of this tape.

Having said that, I think the Reeler's score trumps even mine!

I don't care for it at all, it's one of the cheaper linear tracker's IMHO, it doesn't skip but, I'd say it bangs around in the groove more than it should, just my opinion. Dale will argue otherwise of course!

Hello Stuwee,
I sold the A301 and A501 to Jim in Arizona he was amazy at the condition and sound. Sold the Preamp 2100L in new condition. This set up was amazing as a front end, but I already have my Mcintosh set up fairly new and some vintage Receivers, etc. With that money I got from the SAE I bought another Mac receiver and and another Nak, tapes etc. So now the Vintage count of receivers stands 4, Marantz 2265B, 2270, Mcintosh MAC 4100 amd 4200, and bonus is an SAE A7 and T7 tuner and 8000 Tuner as new. So Deck count Studer A810, Nak Dragon, ZX-9, CR-7A, and CR-5A. And tapes to last a life time, maybe 5. I want to get now a vintage Mcintosh CD player MCD 7007, or if I can find a NAK OMS-7 II CD player tht will do.

I can't remember the last time I found a pre-recorded reel. CDs were 50 cents each. I also found a great photography book called Jazz Giants and a very nice Pin-Ups from 1852 to Now 1974 edition hard back, both for 50 cents each!

The score that made my day was the Maxell S tapes, all sealed! I love two pack tapes very much. I had to really dig for these and of course asked if they had any more, but no. All of the cassette tapes were 50 cent...for all of them!!

Stuart you always have some new and interesting tapes to show. I'm curious as to how you store/display them.

Larry,

Nothing fancy really, until I record on them they're usually stored vertically in MA-XG boxes within a larger box atop the wardrobe. Yes, it's that technical.
Moreover, maybe credit should go to the people I've bought the tapes from in the first place, as 80% of the tapes I've posted on The "recent acquisitions" thread have been purchased in the last year.
Prior to that I can't say how they've been stored but arrive in good condition and with no issues thus far.

Also, as I tend to go for type IVs, perhaps pride of ownership, construction and quality of tape all play a part in the tapes longevity.

Regards,

Stuart

Hi all,

Well, what with moving last month it's been pretty quiet on the tape trail of late. However, a few opportunities came my way that I just couldn't pass up. And anyway, it's always good to be able to post some good old-fashioned tape pron, which I know you all secretly crave...

Apart from the TDK MA-Xs, none were that expensive. Indeed, the 1986 vintage TDK Ds were almost ridiculously cheap - £1 in total with a free Metal XR as well - and from ePay to boot!

The TDK MA-Xs were expensive but still half the price of the MA-XGs, for basically the same tape but lighter weight shell. As for the Maxells... let's just say the price was fair and I'm happy...

Mini because it's small, only 5 tapes, haul because I finally got some inexpensive NOS samples of what I consider to be an excellent Ferric in the AD 90's and a FeCr 90 from the early 80's that I can't wait to try on old faithful. At first I was going to just add it to my collection but now that I've thought about it more, screw it, I'm going to use it. Life's short, and if you can't sink your teeth into some NOS now and again - what's the point right? And yeah, I'm going to try at least one if not both AD's as well...

Jr. gets the LNX for his panny portable recorder. The Fuji Metal goes into the Pal pile...

And as I learned today, my cell phone sux for indoor shots! *fit*

Here are the tapes I recently got for the month of June. I placed an order with Matt in May and had to have them sent back to him and resent to my Canadian address. Anyway I got them. Also got some tapes off Dr. Bo and one other seller on Ebay. So here is all of them for this month with a few pics to show them off. Im still missing three tapes (one off one person and two off another), but hopefully they will turn up somewhere.

For fun I updated my rack with all the Maxell tapes in it and took a pic shown here.

Nice lot there Brax, of course you know you'll never use them, there just too nice to unwrap. Unwrapping NOS tapes is a love hate thing, you have to do it quick like pulling off a bandaid, or removing duct tape from someone's mouth*wink*

Won these used/ new tapes off Ebay today. Paid $14.51 for them plus shipping. Only thing is they don't all have the proper J cards or stickers, if they come with one at all. Lucky I have generic ones I can use, plus extra stickers from other tapes. I hope these tapes aren't too beat up or they'll be going into the garbage.

Interesting that the TDK SA-Xs were made in Germany while the SF from the same year (and same seller) was made in Japan.

The price I paid it was a steal, so I like to think so. I have a good system and the Dragon is to complement mine for parts. The receiver I like for a spare room, it is a true Nelson Pass design 60 watts that is more than enough, and many on the web say that sounds better then the TA-4A. So what is not to like as the seller states that is perfect.

Horror story, the two units came in one box, Dragon on top of the amp and poorly packed with just one pass of bouble paper and peanuts, so the top of the amp got damage and scratch, and a corner got dented. From mint to beat up. So the seller is refunding as soon as he gets the amp. The Dragon was fine but the faceplate is scratch on the top, and the fron is perfect, so I am getting 100.00 refund. Also the deck is a 1989 and heads look like new, but went to ES labs for an overhaul and the faceplate will be replace for a nice one.

So here is an update.
I gave the Power seller until Friday to get my refund, so no go, I just contacted Ebay and they are giving the seller a week to step up to the play, if he doesn't it gets escalated and the buyer protection program kicks in. What we buyers have to do to get things done.

All the buttons on the inside of the door work and the light in the tape compartment can still be seen through the translucent door. It's pretty ridiculous and has just about everything I've always wanted in this format and a head phone jack with volume control??? What me gunna do wit dat? The cassette deck will need a little care. It'll do as another playback machine.

Interesting you've said that, you're the second person whose mention it. I think mine were either damaged or could just be suffering SSS. But I got them dirt cheap anyway, so it's not really a big loss. When I can find the right size screw driver, I'll be ripping the pancakes out, and replacing them with some fresh mid nineties UR stock. Those shells are just too good to bin.

Cool stuff you always have Brax. Those Melsonics look like there related to the Clydes from another thread. Do they say where they are made or anything? And are those 3" reel to reel Realistic tapes there in the bottom right hand corner? Are those NOS? Cool find either way. *thumbsup*

Thanks. The Melsonics- not sure where they were made. I only bought them to be consistent with tapes I made space shuttle recordings onto- since I need to add to that collection. And the Realistic reels- they are 7". Must be the earliest Radio Shack reels I've seen yet. Made with Mylar. I'll have to update my Radio Shack reel to reel pictures in that thread since I've found a couple more to show.

Latest acquisitions over the past couple of months:

I'm particularly pleased with the early Fuji Metal. An excellent and very rare tape, which was very expensive when new. I had to purchase it among a whole load of others, including the TDK MA, the '80s SAs and some of the BASFs. Picked up 5 of the Chrome Extra, a few TDK SFs, a few more That's MR-X Pros, and 10 more 1988 TDK MA-X.

Well, on Monday I picked up these BASFs locally from a recording studio. Their speciality was opera recordings! There were 9 Maximas and 7 boxes of the Chromdioxid Extra IIs!! I asked about why the C120s and they said these were the best they had come across and had enabled them to fit most of their opera productions onto the one tape for their members.

The Maxell was one of a couple that came from the US. Takes me back... The Fuji JP-IIx looks like an excellent quality tape and very elegantly packaged too! I have a source and will be getting more of this one...

Richard,

Amazes me that you can find these multiple scores. I'm happy with the individual tapes I pick up here an there but quantity has great appeal.

Very nice cassettes indeed, haven't seen those 120s before. I have a couple of BASF IV 120 metals which are very good. I'm thinking these would be very close to the metal.

My optimum length is 90 minutes, the 120s have never let me down so far.

WOW! I didn't think I'd ever see those available in the public domain, only in the dark recesses of a long lost Nakamichi lab.

Yes, and the BIN price was beyond lower than anyone would expect from a seller that should have known better. I've put them in my will already...

If Stuwee is serious, it is a complete, near mint set of 2 & 3 head Nakamichi alignment gauges.

In the words of Monty Python. Ohh you Lucky Lucky Barsted. They don't come up that often and when they do bidding is usually pretty savage to say the least. Hope the BIN price did not hurt too much.

In 2 years of searching and watching, I've never seen a complete set anywhere. I paid more for them than any one of my decks, but not by much. The genuine Nak cal tapes will cost me more. I've got Teac and Sony test tapes, but they just don't work the same.

BASF, Sony and TDK would be my preference, really they're all good.

Have to ask, what are the elusive tapes you're searching for?

Stuart

Im still wanting one more Vertex to be honest, plus maybe some chrome dioxide BASF CSII tapes. Im also wanting to get a few more mid grade 60 min tapes for my Grace to You audio pieces. I have a line on some HF-ES and UX-S tapes too, plus some DX-4s. Other then that I don't really need anything else.

Brax,

I'm just curious on how you get very good pictures of your tapes. I'm trying to think they have been scanned through an A3 scanner. I thought you might of even used a camera, but note that there is NO reflective light bouncing back from a flash light.

Other then that, nice find. :)

LN,

Some of those pictures are off Ebay, and a couple were my own. I use my flatbed scanner to get the pics of tapes I get, but as said a lot of these were taken off Ebay pics. All you have to do is make sure your light source is at a 45 degree angle from your item being snapped.
