the td1200 was a single capstain mechanism, the mk2 was dual capstain ,i have a new one of these and 2 used and a spares one. i use one of the used ones no other car audio comes close ,anyway to also answer or help on your question the code is not in the tuner box it is on the main board on the bottom of the unit i cant explain well until i take a look ,i have seen one advertised without code and the seller said that nakamichi japan still kept all the codes for these machines if any other member can help advise on this
this is my first post and im from n.ireland and am a weak typer .

The code is attached to an IC near the front left corner of the main unit. The IC lies between the volume control and the transport. It will be a 5 digit number. You might remove the top cover and try peeking along the left side of the cassette before disassembling the unit. Look also for the number on the case. Many installers would write it on the outside.

i took a look at the main board in 2 of my machines and the boards were diffarent, but the part which i am nearly sure has to do with the code is beside part no 6390a on the older board it is fitted into r656 and wrote on the component a104 and on the newer board it is in in position r603 and wrote on component is a743, i am friends with the best engineer in ireland and i will get him to check if im right .
there is also a service man who works on nakamichi in france his first name is denis[ parsingon] the sir name is not correct but is very similar to this
i am not an engineer only an enthusiast and hopefully try to help ,and we all sit in a car and are interested in tapes . i also have td1000,td700,td500,td400,td300,and the first quality mobile tape player the 250 which mounted on the old rear wheel drive tunnel this is an excellent machine .there is a rare machine called a td800 which i have not got i tryed trading a td 1200mk2 for one but the deal is going on 4 years with this man maybe this year. bye for now

I have a TD 800 missing the hideaway box. Do you know if the TD 1200 box works with the TD800?

some of the usa models of the 1200 had little white lock in connectors but they were some of the last mk2 units i would say that your 800 has the two plugs thatplug straight into the tuner, dolby box . i can give you a lend of the box of my spares machine ,to try only it is set for european fm incriments so i can try to get it converted for usa incriments.the 800 the tapedeck stoped releasing something to do with the azimuth ajuster and i have experience of all the other units but not the 800 but there is one man in the uk who told me the 800 was behind the 1200 soundwise
the nakamichi rd units were hopeless closely followed by the tuner deck units very poor i have to do my meet and greet yet
hopefully the tapeheads are interested in this subject otherwise ill have to keep quiet i cant stand the mentality of these car audio forums nothing to do with sound ,i also have 100cdc transport 100dac 100pa all aliminum fully floating but the tape deck is superior to reference cdbye for now francie

Thanks for the responces,I recieved my 1200 two,yes it is a two model.I looked all around on the left in side and could not find the code.I have a 1200 two in my truck and 1200 two and another 1200 and an 800 for backup. Plus this mystery 1200 with no code.If yall can find out anything more I am open .I dont even on a cd player nor have any desire to own one not even in my truck.I record off of vinyl.I am almost certain that the 1200 box will also work on an 800.I have BOTH so will hook it up to make sure.My typing skills are also weak....thanks again Robert

Like Haystack said the 1200 box has to be an earlier version for the 800 to fit,but a newer box could maybe be modified to fit....Robert
