Okay, in my lust to have a nice r2r library, well anyway. I have purchased several tapes that have beautiful boxes and original reels properly labeled. Now, I can obtain cd's to record the tapes with ( as in replace the old tape with new), record from a cd player thru the KW9940 amp onto the r2r tape. is this doable? I know in the old days we used to do that with everything from am radio to 4 track tapes. I assume that the cd player simply connects to the line in on the kenwood... or the line in on the r2r? With the discreet and cd4 demodulator would it be possible to line in to the quad reciever stereo and line out to the r2r(akai1730ss quad) in 4 channel-matrix. Thereby "creating" a 4 channel tape? I think I did such a thing years ago and made some quad 8 tracks on stereo 8 track blanks that worked very well. Anyway, I ain't wanting to get into rocket science, I just want to have some nice tapes. the romance of watching the reels rotate is in itsself an amazingly relaxing feeling.
You guys are the ones that let me join, don't blame me...

Of course it is doable but being the dynamics in CD is like that on a typical FM radio station a lot of the time, it can be helpful to use a dynamic expander when making the transfer- this type of device which can be obtained on E bay probably cheaply comes in the way of several dBx type units. I have used the 119 with success. The dynamic range can be enhanced with these in a variable expansion setting- it is not fixed at 2:1,1:2 like the noise reduction units are. Some level matching and adjustments will be required to get the best effect as well as some trial testing. You can make CD's sound better. There are probably better item as well but at higher costs.

Wouldn't it be better to record from CD to tape without any processing and then use the expander while playing the tape? It would work as a NR, giving less hiss (not that hiss is a big problem on r2r anyway).
