Well nothing at the moment. Though I did listen to the "Born In The USA" by Bruce Springsteen CD beginning to end earlier. I also had the deck "playing" the tape for VinylDavid earlier while it was tranfering between reels. But it's a blank. So nothing was on it. I'll put something on in a little while and report on it.

No tapes today, but yesterday I was playing a few to test the repair on my Aiwa deck I just got back. The tapes were "Favorite Songs #3" which was a compilation in the mid 80s, and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Soundtrack.

On the Fav Songs tape there is:

1. Danger Zone (from Top Gun movie- forget singer)
2. 1999- Prince
3. Modern Woman- Billy Joel
4. Venus- Bananarama
5. (Forever) Live and Die- ??
6. Where's the Party- Madonna

And the rest are more Madonna songs.

Side A was the "Cosmos" Soundtrack. If you remember it was a compilation of songs that Carl Sagan used in the show series he did in the early 80s. Tape was a Fuji FR-II chrome from mid 80s.

followed by;

ZZ Top - Tres Hombres, an all time favourite desert disc album. Loved all of their 70's stuff up to and including Deguello.
After that, well lets just say I'm happy that they reinvented themselves and found a new (arguably larger) audience but the slick production and change of direction didn't do it for me, the soul had gone.

Prince - Sign O' The Times

Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express

Have the house to myself this weekend, speakers repositioned, Nakamichi primed for a lengthy session.

All tapes sourced from vinyl and so far I've played Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pronounced and Second Helping(Simply Vinyl and Speakers Corner pressings) on a later version TDK MA-XG.

Next up is a Dead Can Dance compilation, recorded on a BASF ME IV 120, with selections from The Serpents Egg, Aion and Into The Labyrinth. Really atmospheric, well recorded and a late find - mistakenly, as I had always considered them to be Gothic and overlooked their music because of that.

Kate Bush The Kick Inside is a lovely recording on a Nak. ZX-C90.
Not really an easy choice, as her vocals, a sugary falsetto on a few tracks straddle the edge of what is comfortable for me to listen to.

Elton John's Greatest Hits, from the DCC lp on a Maxell Metal Vertex 60.
I just like the singles, memories of the 1970s.
His early stuff stands up well over time as most good songwriting will, catchy and lyrical.

That oughtta do it for today.

steely dan - aja
mfsl vinyl, recorded to a fuji dr-1

first time i heard this was a not so great copy of the original vinyl, recorded to a 1988 vintage tdk sa 90. sounded pretty terrible, two head deck, opera music in the bg, and not from a bad erase, the recording setup bled demodulated fm signals into the recorded output.

it was hard to top aja as one of the first serious albums i had the pleasure of experiencing.

those angsty teen days, made the music that much better.

bittersweet memories, more sweet than bitter.

My own compilation, I have the 1st LP and many, many remixes, just about every song played in the clubs back in the day that had a commercial remix release, I bought it, including some (sick *devil*) stuff some DJ's threw together,

just yesterday i found a once used maxell communicator c60.

it was wound wayy to tight, i unwound the tape until the impressions left by the leader tape went away, about 4 or 5 minutes in total.

then i rearranged and deleted tracks from the new water becker album until i found a tracklist that was more cohesive, coming in at 46 minutes, a proper album length in my eyes.

door
canon
bob
upside
saturday

flip

audrey
selfish
circus
gods eye

it was hard to bias the tape, the bass was difficult to get sounding right.
otherwise,
i actually like this album, the dub influence is a welcome change.

and i have an aunt audrey and an uncle bob, and hes not just my uncle anymore. *reelspin*

I made this compilation of Nick Drake's, "Bryter Layter, Five Leaves Left and Pink Moon" - it sounds wonderful on the CR-7A which is newly serviced.

Taped from the Simply Vinyl reissues this is surprising given the variable quality of the SV catalogue, definitely some of the better ones.

Also running in a new addition to my stereo; a Chord Electronics SPM 1200C power amp. I may be gone for some time........................

gamve, The first Firefall album is one of those albums where every song is great. A few months ago I went to a Firfall reunion concert in Boulder. It was filmed for a dvd that should be coming out soon! All the original members were there except for the late Michael Clarke. They even had Joe Lala sit in on percussion! It was quite a show. I was right down in front so I hope I'll be able to see myself on the dvd.

Well I got out one of my mix tapes I made up in the late 90s of music I got off my older brother. It was made on a Fuji chrome GT 60 tape. Dolby S.

Music as follows:

Side A:

Twice As Hard
Hard to Handle
She Talks to Angels
Beds Are Burning
Highway Girl
Kiss Me You Fool
Once Bitten Twice Shy

SideB:

Is This Love
Still Of the Night
Here I Go Again
Cradle of Love
Shelter Me
All She Wants
Don't Turn Around (part of)

Must say it was neat listening to music from some years back that I haven't heard for a while. I know the first 3 were the Black Crows, the following I think was Midnight Oil, and so on. I don't write down who the music was made by, so I have to guess.

Played this on my so called retired Sony deck which played the tape with flying colors. Not bad for a deck that I was told needed new heads.

Rat44, I agree with your opinion about "Wire Fire". It's nowhere as good as "Street Corner Talking" or "A Step Further" but it's still worth the occassional listen. I just got a sealed 8-track of "Boogie Brothers". I would like to listen to it but I'm reluctant to break the shrinkwrap. I remember hearing it about 20 years ago at a guy's house. If I remember correctly it was a fairly decent one.

This was waiting for me in the mailbox today...

The Richie Furay Band-"Alive" 2008 cd

This is a 2 disc live album from the Rock And Roll Hall Of Famer. The recordings were taken from 2 shows the RFB did in Boulder and Denver in Dec. of '07. I was at both of these shows. The album sounds as good as I remembered them. For more info check out richiefuray.com for more info.

The Kentucky Headhunters-"Electric Barnyard" 1991 cd recorded to a Radio Shack HD 90....

I was digging through my stash of old tapes and found this. It had been recorded on once before, but I didn't need to keep the previous recording. So, I tried taping my favorite KHer's cd. Sounds pretty good but much brighter than the Fuji DRIIs' I have been using.
