I have a Sony PS-LX5 with no manual and next to 0 know-how.

At the inside, base of the Tonearm is a black plastic device (like a plunger) that comes out of the base and has an elongated, slightly curved 'tee' on top'.

I pushed down on it and it depressed and came back up like it was under a slight hydraulic pressure.

I would be so thankful if someone could enlighten me on its purpose.

Thanx much in advance.

I would also know the most economical way to get a owners, or better, a service manual for this model. Chuck

From your description that sounds like the tonearm lifter. Post a pic, we're visual types around here :)

Vinylengine doesn't have manuals for that table. There are probably numerous places online to purchase a copy though, look around.

If it is the item circled in red, then it is a tone arm lifter. There is probably a button or lever that raises and lowers it. It would be to raise and or lower the tone arm on a record without using your fingers directly on the tonearm. This way you can cue up a specific song on an album or lift the tonearm to end playback early.

This is not a great shot, but you can see it this side of the Tonearm Pivot.

You should have a button near the front of the turntable that actuates the lifter. Or the lifter maybe part of the auto start/ turnoff system on the table. I don't have a Sony table so I am not sure if it is an automatic turntable or not.

That's it........and when I push the switch, it does raise and lower. Thanx much, both of you. Chuck

Now all you need is a headshell and cartridge. You'll be spinning records like a madman :)

When you have an album on the table and spinning you can raise the tone arm and move it to another song on the album and lower it without scratching the album or damaging your stylus.

Thanx much. You guys are great!

I have a integrated headshell/cartridge coming and a quality headshell-to build coming.

I have located manuals on the net and they're expen$ive....I am on a fixed income in a household that does not understand my passion for this stuff, so every $ is going in the wrong direction for them*eyepop*.

If anyone has a manual for this Sony that can be transfered via email or CD, I would gladly pay a fair price. Chuck

Hi Chuck! Just my 2 pennies, bypass the lever and just use your hand, pinky finger on the pinth, index finger on the headshell hook, I started out this way as a newbee myself...don't be scared *eyepop*
