Been a while since I got out and saw/heard some decent live music.
Got tickets for Fleetwood Mac at Rod Laver Area in Melbourne Tuesday next week.. Really looking forward to this one, It's a pity Christine Perfect (McVie) is not touring with them.

I almost went and saw Zappa Plays Zappa this week but decided to not spend the money. It's coming up on my busy season at work (the USPS) so I probably won't see any shows until next year. Last show I saw was Foghat on Labor Day. Have fun at Fleetwood Mac. They were here earlier this year. I've never seen them live. I'm sure they will still be good.

The last concert me and the honey went to was The Australian Pink Floyd Show on December 8, 2008, prior to my birthday. It was a sold out show and the band did the entire Wall album with the some encore performance from Dark Side...
Very awesome concert!

Next concert we'll be going to won't happen until April 9, 2010. And it's also sold out. This will be the second time we've seen him:

Saw this show a couple of years ago....WOW note perfect. Would go and see it again tomorrow if I had the chance. As far as cover bands and stage shows go, this is a pretty special performance.

I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits back in the early eighties but envy your Knopfler tickets....hope you enjoy

Hi all,

With the 30th anniversary of Pink Floyd's release of "The Wall" it's nice to hear my local FM radio station, Rock 101, devoting the whole day as a tribute to them.

Would have loved to see them during the time, but, I'll see the Australian Pink Floyd Show, at least one more time. Missed out on a Yes concert, this year, as they cancelled on their last swing through Vancouver.

One of my favourite concerts had been all-Canadian mix featuring Headpins, Prism, Harlequin and Streetheart in 2005.

Anyone else hear of a tidbit out there that Roger Waters is planning a commemorative "Wall Tour" next year, or so?

Here's a link to my favourite rock fm station featuring a song flick and an interview with "The Wall's" producer, Bob Ezrin.

You lucky dog! Fleetwood Mac's last concert here in Vancouver sold out in no time at all and I couldn't get good seating tickets. I think the only concert which consistently sells as fast is AC/DC. People were paying more than $1500 for tickets to that concert. "The Dance" is a great CD, and I recorded it to reel-to-reel, immediately. What's your favourite album?

Thanks clhboa. Truth is I love all the different Fleetwood Mac's from the Peter Green's Danny Kirwin's, Welsh etc through to the Buckingham/nicks era. One of my all time favorite bands...and what a history. If you ever get the chance, Mick Fleetwood's autobiography is a ripper read.

Hi Graham,

Were there any solo performances by Mick, or Lindsey during the concert? They didn't bring in a marching band for "Tusk?" Had you listened to Lindsey Buckingham's 2008 album, " Gift Of Screws?" I haven't, but I've read it's worth having.

Mick did a huge drum solo on "Worlds Turning". all the band members left the stage except Lindsay who sat on the edge of the stage and just watched...amazing.
Lindsay did "Big Love", the version off the "Dance" solo. Jeez he is an underrated guitarist.
No marching band for Tusk unfortunately. Lindsay had a tape setup for it. It still sounded great.
I have "Gift Of Screws" but have only listened to it once so far. Some of Lindsay's solo stuff is sorta quirky but I still like it very much.

Last week I scored about a dozen type II tapes, TDK SAs and Maxell XL IIs, all 1980s vintage from a thrift store for half a buck a piece. Two of the Maxell tapes contained a live concert of Liz Story and Michael Hedges at the Broadway Music Theater. The program was broadcast some time in the 1980s from KTCZ in Minneapolis. One tape was complete and I left it as it was while the other had to be transferred to another cassette as only half of one side was used and these days I try not to waste tape, especially 1980s type II variety. Both Ms. Story and Mr. Hedges were in great form that night and I was lucky enough to find the index cards were marked checking off the box showing they were recorded in Dolby B. I was also fortunate to find the original owner used a good quality deck and the tapes were recorded at the proper level. Except for one brief 5 to 10 second distortion where a truck or something must have driven by causing the FM signal to drift, it's a near flawless recording. One of the benefits of thrift store finds is not only coming across good quality used tapes at low prices but every once in a while there will be some excellent music on those tapes recorded decently enough no enhancement is needed. This oustanding live concert was one such find. Score another one for the little guy.

Hi Graham,

Now, that will be a fine concert to be at! How large or small is the venue? Geri and I will be at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver on April 9th to see the old man, himself, Mark Knopfler. It's been a long wait, as I bought the tickets some 5 months ago. I was just listening to this album the other night.

The Princess Theater in Launceston is an old historic venue that goes way back. It has a lower gallery and and upper tier and it does have reasonable acoustics.
I Guess it holds no more than 3-400 people. When I saw Mayall there last time he had Walter Trout touring with him. That concert was unforgettable. This time he has Aussie Bluesman Chris Wilson with him. Highly anticipated.

Have fun at the Mayall show. The guitarist in his band now is Texan Rocky Athas. I saw him play when he was a member of Black Oak Arkansas in the late 90's. He's good. He also was a school mate of Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Just got back from the show...WOW. Mayall has aged very gracefully and mellowed somewhat as he never used to play any of his oldies with his usual comeback line of "what did you come here to listen to some old records"
What a show, all the band were brilliant with the standout being Rocky Athas, what a player. Best for me were "Parchment Farm" and "Room to Move" and the encore was "Hideaway". If you get the chance this is a must see show.

Sounds like a good time Graham. How long was the show? Geri and I were at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, last night, to take in Mark Knopfler and the band. We watched him at the Orpheum Theatre the year before and I would say last night's concert was the better sounding of the two. Might have been the different acoustics, or sitting at the elevated Dress Circle seating, 6 rows from the front, at right stage. He played for two hours, which included two encore songs. He received a standing ovation four times, once for my most favourite Dire Straits tune "Telegragh Road". I had been waiting for that song all night. The other ovation was for "Sultans Of Swing". His band is excellent and I could watch him every year he comes to town. This time I actually bought a programme, and the Italian in me wanted to dicker on the price of the lithogragh, but there were plenty of people paying $100 for those and the circus jockey behind the counter would have probably have yelled out "Next!".

On a somewhat related note, I did find some gently used tapes in a thrift store recently and one of them has a great recording on it that sounds like a live recording of Stevie Ray Vaughn.

I won't be taping over that. :)

June 29th, going to hear Earth Wind & Fire for the 4th or 5th time... (starting to lose count... those guys are awesome. First saw them with my stepmom back when I was only 12 years old, Bremen Germany, LOL!)

Hi John,

We saw the Australian Pink Floyd group in December 2008 for my birthday. They performed the entire "Wall" album, and encored with a few Dark Side of The Moon songs, including "Breathe".

Now, Earth Wind and Fire would be a good concert to be at. I have them on 8-track and it's one of the better sounding cassettes.

For me, one of the most under-appreciated singer on national level is Heidi Joy from Omaha.

For me, she is easily equal of Celine Dion. Her voice/singing is a little more nuanced and transparent than Dion's.

I "discovered" her about 10 years ago on local Border's Cafe. She was just starting and it was a free concert.

When I heard her singing for the first time, I thought, "Wow! What an amazing voice! and what is she doing in Borders?"

So I started "stalking" her whenever and wherever she gave free concert. She sang the most wonderful rendition of "Ave Maria" I've ever heard.

Listening to her singing live (12' in front of her) and comparing the experience with the cd version of her songs was the catalyst for realizing the conventional stereo set-up is something of a gimmick. (At least when it comes to lead singer/band acts)

She became a big time hit in Omaha, retired last year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCziaYq4tMI

Btw. She is also very down to earth, a real person, not a diva.

During her Border's days, she actually helped her band members carrying equipment, and opened the door for me when I happend to come in, this was when she was herself carrying her bandmates' equipments and personally thanked people for listening to her singing.

Lesse here... my last show of the season featured Red Priest (think "Rolling Stones meet Vivaldi") back in early April. Our earlier artists were the Taiko ensemble Nagata Shachu and jazz flutist Holly Hofmann and her husband/pianist Mike Wofford.

Out on my own this year I saw Southern Culture on The Skids (best description I can come up with is: B-52s meet Reckless Kelly) at Rhythm & Brews. Also at R&B I saw Shooter Jennings last time he was in town and shortly before that, James McMurtry.

We open next season with Kathy Mattea in late September (her "Coal" CD is the core of the concert) and also have performances by the Eroica Trio and SF Jazz Collective during the spring semester so I've got at least three great live shows already lined up.

The Riverbend Festival is upon us in Chattanooga. Last night:

Chris Hillman/Herb Pedersen on one of the small stages, a local legend by the name of Jimmy Tawater who was the house band at Dino's on South Broad Street where I mis-spent a lot of my youth, and Sheryl Crow on the large stage.

Tonight, it's gonna be Black Cat Moon and The Waybacks on the small stages, and Alison Krauss on the big stage.

Alison and Jerry's show was incredible last night. They only play one other date this year - so if you're near the Telluride Bluegrass (?) festival this summer, you need to go.

Tonight? Blues and symphony. Otis Taylor and Kenny Neal on the small stages, then the Chattanooga Symphony behind the Waybacks and Joan Osborne on the main stage.

Hi Bob,

Is this festival an annual event? No special appearance by Robert Plant for a duet with Alison Krauss? Do you go each year? In Vancouver there's a week of Jazz musicians. I haven't been to the event, yet, though.

Does your wife enjoy the festival, too? I've always thought about sneaking in my portable mindisc recorder to one of the concerts.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. There's nothing better than a live performance!

Riverbend is now 30 years old; it's an annual event that began in the heart of downtown as Five Nights during the nascent era of Chattanooga's urban rebirth. It was originally conceived as sort of a take off to Charleston, SC's Spoleto Fine Arts Music festival but has morphed into an 8 day mostly popular music festival that relocated to our riverfront area near the Tennessee Aquarium and Hunter Museum of Art.

It will draw upwards of 100k attendees per night depending upon the headline artist and it's got a little bit too much carnival atmosphere for me these days, but the music is still pretty good. I know the guys who book it and they work hard to keep the quality up.

Pat really enjoys it - she'll end up dragging me out on a couple of evenings when I'd really rather pack it in because of the heat and I may not care for the headliner and I always end up finding someone cool on one of the small stages.

If I had a good RV, I might consider driving 60 miles up the road to Bonnaroo one year, but I can no longer imagine three days in a tent in a Tennessee field in the middle of summer. It's good to go home at the end of the evening to a pool and A/C. *thumbsup*

Edit: to answer your question about Alison and Robert, no there was no special appearance. I've gotta go back and listen to that album again and see if I can get what all the fuss was about. I just didn't like the songs on it the first time through. Last night, however, was a masterclass in songwriting. And Dan Tyminski as co-lead vocalist was as amazing as Jerry Douglas, who solo'd for about 15 minutes and had everyone mesmerized.

Went to Jazz in the Woods last night. It's an annual free jazz fest running over two evenings run by the Rotary Club of Overland Park, KS. Proceeds go to various children's charities. Most of the artists are smooth jazz artists but last night the Bobby Watson Quartet played. He was a former member of the Art Blakey Jazz Messengers from 1977- 1981, he's from the KC area and is one of my favorite sax players. I'm not good at estimating crowds but they say that 40k people come to both evenings. I would say that with the very favorable weather... in the mid 70's... helped bring out those kind of numbers. Here's some photo's I took:

Taking a break tonight. The Bessie Smith Jazz Strut (aka "the Strut") takes place tonight in the middle of MLK Boulevard. It's always miserably hot and always a party but less so in recent years after some gang battles erupted and got every police organization in ten states scared.

Now there's only two stages (down from 5), the vendors have been pushed back off the sidewalks, they close it down with riot police and street sweepers at 8:30pm and all that crap.

It's been neutered.

But I did get to see one of the acts that is appearing tonight - Louisiana's Kenny Neal played a set last night on one of the small stages by the river. Highly, highly recommended for you blues/swamp boogie fans. I'm adding a CD (or hopefully vinyl) to my short list. Great show. The Waybacks, along with Joan Osborne and John Cowan and the Chattanooga Symphony were not only great, they just looked like they were having tons of fun as they tore through "Abbey Road" - the entire album for their show. Great stuff.

Saw a-ha (remember them?) in L.A. on Sunday - their last US performance ever as the group "retires" after completion of the European leg of their tour this fall.

Oh! yes, I remmeber them. "Take it on me", I was surprised to find out that they are from Norway.

Thanks. It was all lawn seating and I was in the fifth 'row' off to the right. During the show it was no problem for anyone taking pictures to get right in front of the stage one at a time for a minute or so to get some close ups. No one abused that privilege.

Here's a few of the other photographers I collaborated with. Darn I didn't have enough depth of field... but it's a classic example between what a Nikon vs Canon owner looks like! IMHO *Spin*

Okay, day 7 of Riverbend. Headed out to see Jimmy Webb, he of "Galveston" fame in a few minutes. Songwriter for over 40 years now, I guess. Should be good. He's kind of quirky so I'm hoping for good things.

Last night's report:

Darius Rucker's country incarnation is okay, I guess. I was never a big fan of Hootie & the Blowfish. The tunes all sounds the same, and frankly, except for the songs he covered last night, so did these. Still, the band was tight and the show was good. A local band called "The Grinnin' Mules" kicked ass, so to speak. Good, tight rock and some funny songs. Good tunes. The best show of the night, however, was Janeva Magness. Oh, my, can she belt 'em. Blues singer, records for Alligator Records. Great band. Definitely worth checking out.

Reckless Kelly last night at the Texas Hall of Fame outside of Bryan, Texas. Great set - including some new stuff of their own and a hugely good cover of Teenage Wasteland in the encore!

Just part of the Texas dead cow and BBQ birthday extravaganza weekend.

Lucked into a great set by Ray Wylie Hubbard at the Texas Monthly BBQ festival on the lawn at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin yesterday afternoon.

First time I'd heard him live. Good stuff.

Kathy Mattea tonight at the Fine Arts Center. An amazing singer.

If you're within 500 miles of one of her shows, it's waay worth the drive. Heard her sing three or four of her mining songs to a group of honors students yesterday afternoon during a presentation to them - she's one of the most powerful singers I've ever heard.

What, no live music since late September?

Elton John and Leon Russell last night at the UTC Arena from Gold Circle seats. Here's Leon from an iPhone shot. Unbelievable as ever, though he read either the music, lyrics, or both off a Macbook sitting on his piano all night.

The new stuff from "The Union" CD is pretty nice, especially the Jimmy Rogers tribute.

Perhaps one of my favorite 80's songs (if not among one of my ALL TIME favorite songs) would be "New Gold Dream" by Simple Minds.

I found a YouTube video of it being played live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLdMXILw1wQ). The video is a bit annoying since it cuts to a different angle every two or three seconds. But the playing is awesome. Here is a perfect mix of pounding drums, a riffin' guitar, and dreamy, spacy synthesizers, all of which make what is to my ears a delicious combination. If anyone can recommend some additional songs of this genre (surely they must exist in obscurity), I'd love to hear them. I already know of bands like The Cure, Depeche, and Echo + The Bunnymen.

Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lTFFOFxWPl8) is the studio version of the same song being played on my X-2000R.

*bigthumbup*Catch them in concert if they come close to your town! Note , that they have since added Charleston SC, Atlanta GA , and Birmingham AL in early April 2011 prior to going to Australia/New Zealand for shows in mid April. Downunder, Robert Randolph & Family Band will be opening for them in a couple of places. That is an added treat as Robert is great and very nice to see live!

Geez, this is starting to look like my personal thread...

Anywhoo.. here's another tip: The Secret Sisters. Saw them last night at Riverbend, the week-long music festival on Chattanooga's riverfront. They're the real deal. Fabulous voices, incredible harmonies and they pick great songs. Starting to write some good ones, as well. Of course, it helps that T Bone Burnett decided he wanted to produce their stuff. Get the CD and see them at your first opportunity. They are incredible.

Didn't want to take anything away from that last post, so here's a report on the rest of the evening. Before the Secret Sisters, saw a pretty good Johnny Cash tribute band - Johnny Folsum 4 as well as an incredibly good Hispanic surf band called Los Straightjackets. Great stage show from them. Wrapped up the night at the main stage with Huey Lewis & the News.

Performance, sound ,sound effects and visual effects were awesome to say the least,a truly great experience.
It was the second show of the three that are scheduled to be presented in Athens, the third one taking place on Tuesday 12 July, which is tommorrow.
The first two shows were recorded and filmed, too and a dvd is going to be released out of them,i'm not sure about the third one though.

Yes I did! I think it was two years ago, open concert and great sound too, although nothing like this one, since this time it was in a close stadium and with their own equipment versus rentals they had to use for Dark side. They did do the best of them though that time too!

This past Fridat night, enjoyed Nektar at Jaxx in Springfield, VA. I was surprised how their newer music blended in with the classics as I have only been exposed to their vinyl records. I had never expected to see this band live, most worthwhile show. Supporting acts such as Brainticket are not to be missed if one is into space rock.

Last Thursday night, saw Rodedelius at Strange Matter in Richmond, Virginia. This guy used to play in Cluster, never thought I would see any of their members perform live. Cool past couple of months for German bands hitting my home state. A friend caught his opening gig here in the States with the dude from Silver Apples, sorry to have missed that one. That show was up in Newark. This tour is rare. If one is into electronic music, check his tour schedule.

Robert Earl Keen put on a helluva show last night at Track 29, the new state of the art music venue in Chattanooga. 15 minutes worth of Road Goes On Forever for the encore had all of us dancing on the ceiling!

This place rocks! First class operation all the way from green rooms and on-site laundry for the musicians to a movable stage that allows for configuring the facility for audiences from 300 to 1700 people, to the best concert sound system I have ever heard.

No more having to spend money to travel to Nashville or Atlanta to see good shows...

Ladysmith Black Mambazo was amazing. Still great after 50 years - this is the group that put world music on the map in 1985 with their Grammy-winning work on Paul Simon's Graceland album. Got to see Turtle Island Quartet last Tuesday (4/3) as the last show of my series this year. Amazing string quartet that plays a lot of jazz/pop fusion on violin and cello. This was a concert based on their latest CD, which is a compilation of Jimi Hendrix compositions. Amazing stuff. A CD worth getting, or concert worth attending if they are in your area.

Caught them last weekend with my gf at the Canal Club in Richmond, Va. I am proud that the gf actually informed me about this show. Its funny how this band is now kind of a family band as three of the members are related. I did miss the flute, which contributed to them sounding like a modern version of Gong.
