Thanks to the others on here especially Acoustic for bringing this model to my attention. I bid on a used one on EBay and won it for $37 plus shipping! I've already designed a spot for it in my new rack which will be made next month. Can't wait to get it home! Question- the one I have doesn't look like it has the rack ears. Can these be bought from somewhere easily?

Cool... your welcome*Hi5*. Interestingly... mine did come with rack ears... so when I got it I just was going to take them off for my use. But they left an opening where the rack mount is so I put them back on. BTW, of course post a pic of your new upcoming rack. I made one a few months ago now... makes a world of difference with everything accessible.

I don't think you got a manual. Here's a link to the manual in PDF form:

The link will work for 90 days or when there is 90 days of inactivity.

Nice buy. I saw one yesterday at a local pawn shop for $49 and I almost bought it. :)

No rack ears on it either though.

The rack ears thing is going to have to force me to shuffle my rack design around. I'll have to move the unit down a shelf or two and redo the sizes all up.

braxus, check some recording studio's in your area, they might have some just laying around, and if you go to k. d. lang's studio, tell her the stu says *wave* from AZ!! What rack size is that, 1/4, 1/2? I could check down here for ya as well:-)<-, you may have to give me a gentle reminder if I forget, K?

Craig,

I think I'll live without the rack ears. I have another unit I'm looking at and it doesn't have them either. So I'll probably put them all together without.

Acoustic,

Do you have a PDF file of the DBX 224X box? I'm looking into getting one of these to add to my system.

I just saw your post today Acoustic. Thanks again for the files. I saw a 224X on Ebay today and it was a BIN auction for $40, so I put my bid on it and paid for it. This one also doesn't have the rack ears, so it will sit well with the 400XG Im also getting.

Im aware there is also a DBX 224X-DS. DS stands for digital system, but how does it differ from the regular 224X? Also on the 224X there is a DBX disc switch. I assume this is for records that use DBX back in the day?

the 224x is a sweet unit. I use one with my GX-747- you cant have too many LED meters to watch as you jam on your favorite tunes *hypnot*

Your welcome.. from what I've read the difference between the x and the x-ds is that the ds does not have the disc decoder (yes it's for dbx encoded records) but they added ins and outs for another tape deck. So you can encode to two tapes at one time or go from one tape machine to another either encoded or not. Great your getting the 224x.... let us all know how it does for you. The only thing I read about is that with the 224x you might have to record your tapes a little less hotter than usual. If you usually go to -5db you might get some distortion using the encoding and have to back down to -3db. Trial and error enjoyment is probably what I would do.:D

Some thoughts on dbx:1) dbx works great but took some time to get to know the units. Which alienated some casual users. 2)The earlier generations of the format were decent but not great, so early word of mouth wasn't the best and dbx and to reprove themselves. 3) You have to playback an encoded tape with a decoder. So that meant it wasn't popular with tape traders or you can't play that tape in the car or on a portable tape player.

Here's a doc on the x-ds no manual though: http://www.filesend.net/download.php?f=1dab46de9b31b274fab03a9a70475c1e

Cool another taper in the KC area. Any thoughts on the 224x on how you use it. Does the tape matter? Yep.... any light show from gear dancing to the music enhances the experience. :D
