Hello everyone, I'm new to the tape world but boy do I love it. My buddy had a tascam 32 and 38 laying around, and I scooped his 32 to use in my home studio for your typical tape delay and effects. It has worked like a dream so far. Sounds great and so easy to use. Unfortunately I fired it up last night and for some reason it was rewinding and forwarding, however when i would try to record or playback the tape it would click and not move. Anyone have any idea what the problem is here? Help!

First thing to check is the capstan belt. They are available if it does need one..

I took it apart last night, and it seems that the belt is fine! However it must have slipped loose and got caught under something. I replaced the belt properly and still the same problem unfortunately, clicks but does not play. Does this mean the Capstan motor needs replacing and where would I be able to get one? Thanks for the help!

Does the pinch roller engage? Does the take up spool try to spin? If they do and the capstan motor isn't turning and if the belt had gotten stuck on something locking the motor up it could have damaged the motor. If the pinch roller and take up spool also don't activate then the problem is elsewhere.

Yes the pinch roller activates, but I believe as you said the belt got stuck on something locking up the motor. Would you know where I could get a new Capstan motor. Is eBay a good place to do so? Thanks again for your help it's been great!

Actually, motor failures on those are not totally uncommon. I think its the same motor as in the 38. If I remember correctly there is also a motor drive transistor (in a TO220 case I believe) that can also fail. You could try Fleabay but a used one may or may not be good. As far as I know they are still available new also..
