Here's my system as it stands today....
the Hafler dh200, Tascam 122 are not working, but just sitting there.....the Advents are just speaker stands, now...the KEF's are a world better.

Here's the rest:
Teac X-3 R2R
Tascam 34B R2R
PreSonus Inspire 1394
Pioneer audio timer
ProJect Xpression III
Shure V15III cart with SuperTrack Stylus
JVC 4DD-5 CD-4 demodulator (modified to remove all filtering)
Pioneer QL-600A as a preamp (the 2ch side of it is a very neutral pre)
Kenwood KT-7500 tuner
Sony DVD player
Realistic TR-803 8 track player
Tascam 122b cassette deck (balanced I/O, but out of alignment)
Akai GX912 cassette deck
JBL 6230 power amp
hafler DH-200 (needs new driver transistors)
KEF C40 speakers
Wire is whatever I can get.

Waiting in the wings are: Panasonic AG1960 SVHS editor, Otari MX5050BIIHD, Teac A3340S (puttin that back into the system to record on the older tape I have)...and then a few more goodies.

That usually resides on my TV, but I had to take it off because I needed to resolder the vertical output IC in my Sony Trinitron.

I am currently awaiting some rack shelving, and then I will have a totally different layout...

oh yeah, and a new preamp.

I'm not sure what that shelving is weight-rated at....but I would be a little nervous with those reel decks up that high.Probably it's got to do with my apprehension of the BIG one we are due for here in the Pacific Northwest (i.e. EARTHQUAKE!!)...or possibly it has something to do with monitary value of nice audio gear up HIGH...I'd want those beauties down just a little lower to the ground!! I know you probably are at a space premium there in your room, but that shelving could be spaced out a little...and lower too...just my 2 pennies worth,and....nice gear for a teenage kid to have....do you know what I would have done to have gear like that when I was your age...you lucky dog *drool**drool**fit* Rob!!

The shelves are rated at 300 pounds per shelf, and having had R2R decks on them for quite a long time, they show no wear or much bending.

I also have two of these units filled with vinyl, and those have more weight than R2R decks.

Soon, as soon as I get some rack shelves and casters, that setup will look mighty different, expanded, and re-worked.

I hope to have that black shelf just for tape machines, and the other racks I have (not pictured) for turntables, tuners, preamps, amps, etc.

having castors on all the racks/cabinets ('cept the record cab) is a major life saver for me. allows much faster and easier swapping out of components, and much easier cleaning around and under them.
oh, and less chance of marring my nice maple flooring.

re heavy vinyl storage-my LP cabinet (bookcase) collapsed on me about 4 months ago. i dont' think i posted about it.
what a noise! and mess!
no records got damaged tho, thank goodness.
i put the cabinet back together with steel pins under the shelves instead of the rinky dink plastic ones that bent from the weight causing the collapse.
and put most of the records on the bottom shelf to reduce weight on the upper shelves.

eventually, or sooner, i'll replace the record cabinets with stronger, castorized ones.

These shelves are genius in the way that they handle supporting the shelves...

Each of the four poles has two plastic cone-shaped semi-circular pieces on it, for every shelf. These have a small raised lip on the inside, allowing them to be set into the grooves that are on the legs, and it makes leveling the shelves much easier.

Then, you just slide the shelf down the legs, until it hits the plastic things, and you push down on it slightly to friction lock it into place. When you put stuff on it, the weight of the stuff pushes down on the plastic, clamping it to the legs even tighter.

Not sure if that makes sense, but I am confident that the shelves would break before the connections to the poles do.

here's a pic of one with nothing on it:

I have 4 of them....they're not cheap at $75 each, but they are certainly wonderful.

Not too shabby, but just IMO, I'd be a little nervous using those wire racks, especially with a deck at the top. Even if it's weight rated for it, such a setup strikes me as unstable and topheavy. But that's just me.

My system consists of both specifically designed gear racks, which I have several components mounted on. And I have the Tascam 32 at the bottom for weight, balance, and stability. It probably isn't apparent from the picture, but that is actually three separate pieces stacked. After the picture was taken, I have side mount plates holding them together.

And then the case that the two Teacs are stacked on is solid oak. That thing alone with nothing in it tops 200 pounds!

Des, I can see your concern, but the thing is actually relatively stable...

The Tascam 122 and Akai together weigh about 40 pounds, and the power amps in the bottom are pretty heavy.

I have no issues with it.

About specially made equipment racks, I have a couple waiting in the wings, that everything will go into except R2R decks (I think), and here's a pic of them. I am just awaiting money to buy casters and a few rack shelves:

Picked them up for free at the end of a gear sale at a local college.
