The two tapes that I would like to find without having to trade in the family silver would be Sony Metal-ES and Sony UX-ES. The look, the vintage, the pedigree. They look terrific. Any of you with personal exerience of these two marques?
Cheers - Marc

Yes on the UX-ES. From what I've read that tape is the same as the UX-Pro, but in the same shell as the lower UX tapes. So get the UX-Pro if you want that tape in the better shell.
The Metal-ES I only have one (original series), but it was a good tape in its day from what I've read and what I remember of the one I do have. Supposed to be better then the Metal SR tape. If you want a really good Sony Metal, the Metal Masters are excellent.

Marc,
I'm not familiar with these models from Sony, although the Metal Masters, standard and super are very good - might be even better depending on the deck used. I still prefer the TDKs in my Nakamichi overall.
Found some images that might be of interest to you, mostly taken today from Ebay Germany.

I have a few of those ceramic case Metal masters.
They were pricey when they came out.
I wish I had bought more at the time.
They do sound great.

Yeah, I remember back in the early 90's one of the shops here in town had the Metal Masters & they sold for $11 or $12 each. That was more than a 4 pack of Maxell XLII-S!
The UX-Pro were great cassettes & I wish Sony still made them.

So who wants to author the [likely futile] petition to shop to the majors to see about restarting production of an audiophile grade cassette?

that's still only a little over half the price of a $20.00 TDK MA-XG...
