I will once I get it back from the shop, having new belts rubbers etc and having the once over given to it before I A-B it to my Nakamichi 1.5.....although the guy who is doing the work to the R-999X ( also did the work on the Nak) says the R-999X will wipe the floor with the Nak, think the Nak is pretty darn good so should be interesting to see!!!*hope*

Well, I finally got back my deck with new belts ( anything rubber actually) and had it given the once over and have had the chance to see what DBX can do...........all I cab say is that if the first two tapes are an indication I will NOT be using B or C any more--DBX is outstanding folks!!!!! I will post some pics later today!!!

Hi Bubba,
Remarkable deck! Is the control drawer powered? If you don't mind the bad translation, you can view this link:

Hi Bubba,
I've seen RVs with kick outs, but not many cassette decks built this way. I'm hoping when you do the A/B comparison, the Nakamichi gets a good run for its' money. You need to find some of those mini-reel Teac cassettes for the big visual impact money shot.

I have the Nakamichi 1.5 and while it is a very good deck, it is CLEARLY not in the same league as the Teac. In just about every aspect the Teac beats it hands down, DBX is fantastically quite, excellent bass response and overall much better dynamics!!! Oh, and it looks cooler....................*praise**thumbsup*

Agreed.
It is a notch above the Cassette Deck 1.5. VERY close to my V-7010. Would have to listen to both side by side for a while to tell the difference.
But I would still give the 681ZX the lead over it. :)

Got the V7010 back today, and I have to say I am impressed with it. The build quality is amazing. Even the guy at the repair shop was impressed by it. We should try both of them sometime.

Thinkin the 999x would be a notch above the 7010 but the 681zx would then be a notch over the 999x, pretty cool we can abc if we want tho!!!

Both TOTL units. Only advantage I see on the 999x is the DBX. I'd actually give the V7010 the nod on build quality. Kinda put together like a late 70's Sansui. :)
We need to have a listen to them together and compare.

Would be fun, still think the 80's stuff will walk all over the 90's stuff in terms of end product....., kinda like sui 70's vs sui 80's lots of flash and stuff but little cuts to quality here and there took away from what could have been killer decks in the 90's....interesting to note what companies focused on in the 90's vs the 80's--ie smooth glide doors- fancy lights etc etc for the 90's--kinda representative of the times, give me something pretty...... where as in the 80's they were more focused on the guts and end quality sound as apposed to the flash.. For me the real shiners were the units that could do both Dragon, or Teac Z 7000 or Tandberg TCD series ( couple of em anyway) interesting to note these are all 80 vintage decks, to name a few !!! Either way, think we are in for one hell of a treat my friend!!!!!

Interesting you should say that....
There is actually more flash and toys in the R-999X than in the V7010. No power operated drawers, for instance. :) The V-7010 got a copper chassis instead.
I don't think Teac cheapened their TOTL decks at all until the V-8030. No offense to V-8030 fans, and it is a fine sounding deck, but the build quality came down a notch or two compared to the V-8000.

I've been a fan of dbx for years. I didn't use it much back in the day because car players weren't equipped for it but I do now on every recording I make. I picked up a Teac V-970X just recently and it does a wonderful job with dbx.
BTW, I really like the drawer on the R-999X.....now that's cool.

Yeah it is pretty cool, pretty solid as well, funny thing is the door opening for the tape feels cheep to me but the specs are still pretty darn good!!! I was expecting a little difference in DBX from Dolby C just from what I have read, however the difference thus far is night and day, very happy with my new toy!!!

Hi Scott,
I have a few Pioneer car decks and auto-related equipment from the late 70's, still working today. None had dbx noise reduction. Which decks have you got?
If there's enough interest I'll begin a new thread for automotive stereo equipment. I was into semi-elaborate car systems in the the late 70's to 80's, well before the idea of multi-speaker, multi-amp systems caught on.

I've got an Alpine 7374 (second only to the extremely rare 7375), 3 Marantz 701's (1 working), Sanyo UR-80 (one of the 2 or 3 shaft-style with DBX), and one of the legends, a Kenwood KRC-999, a 2-unit job that retailed for $1499.00 in 1985, I think the only car stereo that had a motorized drawer of its own. I know Technics/Panasonic made a couple of DBX decks (Actually, I may have one, I've lost track), and Blaupunkt made 1 at least.

Hi Scott,
Amazing decks you've kept. One of my favourites, of the time, were the Nakamichi TD series, like the TD 1200. Ever come across one? Were you buying those decks when they were new? I'm interested in seeing photos of your decks, especially, the Kenwood KRC-999 and. In about the same year, I was unsucessful in ordering the Pioneer Centrate component system. I did have the TOTL Pioneer car audio of the time, which I've kept.
I'll start a new thread and post a few pictures, later, related to vintage car audio cassette decks.

I was in (and just out of) high school when these were new, so there was no way I could afford any of them (didn't keep me from *drool*). The TD1200 family were dazzling, at least in concept, but from what I've heard from more than one source, their tuner performance was mediocre, and reliability was lacking. Most of my car stuff (40 or so headunits) came from you-know-where.
