Here is a Cassette Tape Directory from my 1988 Stereo Review Buyers Guide. I thought it was kind of interesting.

Thanks for sharing those scans. I remember every year-it was either March or April-SR had their special "tape" issue. I learned a lot from both the late Craig Stark and the late Julian Hirsch. Those men should be elevated to legend status in our circles.

And check out those prices! And those were the LIST prices, which, at the time, I thought were exhorbitant. Getting many of the items on that list today for even 50% OVER those prices would now be considered a bargain.

My how times have changed.

I have High Fidelity's tape list from 1987 I could scan up. It had pics with graphs as well. Problem is its well over a dozen pages long. Sometime when I get to scanning it, I'll post it.

I was thinking along the same lines. I wished I could buy some of them for those list prices today.

I'm kind of suprised by the price of this tape...$9+ for a C-90 puts it at about the same price as TDK's top-of-the-line MAX-G. It is good tape, I have used some for years, but I don't remember it being this expensive! I do remember that Sony Metal Master was close to MAX-G in price. Metal Master is excellent tape as well...it is absent from the listing, perhaps it wasn't introduced yet? I do remember buying Metal Master at around 1990 for sure.

Remember that these prices are Manufacturers suggested retail prices and some manufacturers let the retailers discount heavily from these prices.

It looks like the Sony Metal Master appears for the first time in the 1991 buying guide with a MSRP of $11.99.

The 3M Black Watch 4040 Also appears in the 1991 guide for $9 for the 100 min and $7 for the 74 min.

When I get the chance I will scan the 1991 Tape Buying guide and post it. :)
