Music and stereo systems aside, this has got to be my main hobby. Shooting pictures is what I like to do when I relax. I know Stuwee is a photo guy, but any others on here like to click off some shots? This is a pretty serious hobby for me, and I have around 14 or so cameras to do it all with. One or so camera for each type of shooting. My main camera is the 35mm Canon Elan 7, backup is a Canon 1N-HS. When I'm feeling frisky and want quality shots that can be blown up- I grab my Pentax 6x7. I also have a Speed Graffic 4x5 camera when I REALLY want a big neg, but it doesn't get used often. Other cameras are similar, but different too. Im a film guy and will use it till they stop making it. I've dabbled in digital and do have a digicam, but I still like film better. Its easier to get quality shots on film. I'd thought I'd show some of my shots and they are posted below. I put them in order. This is some of my better works, but not all of it. Just the creme of the crop that I had quick access to.

I currently do most of my shooting with Olympus OM-1. I use 28,85,200 and 400 mm with it.
I have a few 35 rangefinders that I'm fond of.
I like medium format also, used to have a Yashica Mat 124G.
Borrowed a Pentax 67 with the 300 mm lense for a weekend.
I know what my next camera will be. That 67 was like an OM on steroids!
Nothing beats a 8 x 10 from a 120 negative.

Good shots Braxus:-)<-. The photo of the lone photographer out in the field is outstanding. I enjoy photography about as equal to enjoying music. I had no problems leaving film behind. Unlike with audio the pluses outweigh the minuses, for me, with digital. I shoot mainly with a Nikon D50. I have the Nikkors 18-70mm, 50mm, and a 70-300mm with VR.... with the 1.5x crop factor of the D50 the 300 is like a 450mm on a 35mm SLR. I did post some shots before but here are a few more. I mainly do outdoor nature early morning or late afternoon shots... but I was a trained portrait and wedding photographer... years ago.

Nice stuff Acoustic.
Ansel Adams and Eliot Porter were my inspirations that sent me down the film road.
As a GI in Germany I had access to a darkroom and loved it.
I still enjoy B&W.
I tried weddings, I don't have 'people skills'.

I'm here, I just saw this thread, braxus, I like all of course, the ones of the pretty blonde young lady back/side lit are stunning, that's what we talked about earlier, you really have to know your stuff to get good exposures in that difficult, elusive, yet so rewarding light. I haven't got a scanner up and running, Yet, my first "sale" here in AZ was a pic I took of the World Trade Towers from the ferry out in the harbor with Extar 25 enlarged to 30x20, you can see the people way at the bottom of the pic (comming soon) best color print film I ever used for large prints in 35mm format. I destroyed the neg per the buyers instruction. I kept a print for myself though. I really needed the $1,200 paid for the print at the time, thinking back *headache* that was a woulda, coulda, shoulda photography moment.
Ya'll can see my crappy digital work in my Pictures and Albums.

I have since learned the only really good lighting outside is when the sun is peaking threw slightly overcast clouds. Bright sun is too harsh and overcast days are a bit too flat with no shine. Getting one of those days is rare here. Funny thing on those two shoots I did of the blonde girl who I knew at the time, the sun was exactly as I needed- slightly overcast with sun peaking through. She joked to me that I knew how to pick the right days.

I had to delete one photo of the group above since it was a girl I didn't get an ok to use for my portfolio, so I was feeling guilty by showing it without her knowing. It bugged me enough I got out of bed and turned the computer on so I could delete the pic on here. She was another blonde. Oh how I love blonde girls.

Thanks Rat... that's what I like the most about digital, the PC is your darkroom. I did a lot of my own B&W back in the day. The knowledge transfers to what I am doing now with my shots and in color, with digital.

I've got the day off tomorrow and will try to get more of my photo's posted.

I only have a crappy digital camera thats good for snapshots.
I miss the days of Ektar 25. I shot a lot of slow speed film too.
I do spend a lot of time restoring B&W Polaroids.
It is very time consuming work.
Some of my most challenging shots were the city nightscapes.
You got some interesting results on Ektar 1000, then they discontinued it.

Are you familiar with the term "golden hour"?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_hour_(photography))

And, for me, overcast days make great days for photography... clouds make great light diffusers and all you have to do is change the contrast/levels/dodge&burn etc (in the darkroom or on the computer) to rid the flatness.

Overcast days are useful but its hard to do much with Gray skies.
You learn how to use a reflector around here.
Good shooting days are few in the Seattle area.
We have a lot of whats called Marine Overcast days here.

Anyone who still uses film may remember the old Ektar 25 film. Anyway Kodak has reissued that film, but updated as its now a 100 speed film. And its more saturated in colors then before. Its called Ektar 100 and will be available very soon in a pro photo store near you. And it has the same grain size and sharpness as the original 25 speed film.

I like the freedom and flexibility of digital photography.... the only limitation I have found compared to film is lower dynamic range. Other than working around that... and it's easy... it's the medium for me.

Actually not exactly John. You can get sharper pics with point and shoots because they retain more depth of field because of their small chips, which means more of the shot will be in focus. If you also down rez the shots while using the sharpen tool, your shot will be as sharp as you'd ever need. What you can do is put your camera in manual mode, put it on a tripod, and set the aperture to a higher number. Then take the shot. Or use a Landscape mode or something that will increase the f stop.

3 Megapixels John?! Wow- that camera is ancient in todays technology. Time for an upgrade. They've now got them up to 15 megapixels already in point and shoot cams. If you ever plan on replacing it in the next year, the Canon G10 is a great camera to go for. I've replaced my last camera with it and will pick mine up hopefully by the end of the year.

Picked this up Wednesday at a thrift. Came with motor drive and 35mm Canon lens. Got in a heated dispute on another forum when a loudmouth "pro" told me film was dead and digital is a hands down winner. Admin called my name out *upyours* so I don't participate there much anymore. I'm mainly a Nikon man but I gave picked a couple Canon pieces in the past months. Also have a Hasselblad and a couple other minor sets ups. I still enjoy film. Not use to a digital point-and-shoot yet and have never done well with autofocus. The A-1 works perfectly though the battery is dying. My Nikon FA works (single shutter speed) with a dead battery but the Canon is plain dead. With discount it was $12 plus tax *bananadance*.

I love the A-1, I have a good friend who can repair those. He is Nikon/Pentax/Canon/Olympus film-camera certified and used to have his own store. Digital pretty much killed his business and he only does work on the side now. Wanna sell the Canon?

These photos you see below, are a fragment of my first brushes of SLR Photography, a number of years ago. One says I have a very creative soul, but again say a fragment, because my now deceased arts/music despising conservative parents, recklessly chucked tons of dia-slides and developed film-negatives into the rubbish bin *fit* without having a slightest chance to rescue them...A lot better creative shots than these, probably many 100's!...I mostly went for creative, chaos, night and landscape photography. I was often called by pro photographers a professional, not a humble amateur ...I just couldn't get it. The analogue Canon & Nikon SLR's I used are gone too...My parents where throw everything away types, no respect for any artistic/musical interests, sad yes *frown* All I now in terms of Cameras is a Digital Powershot Snapshot 8MP I bought before Xmas last year. I'm not sure if I like to start with photography again?!? - The loss of so many creative photos I somehow find numbing, to some extent even near traumatic (I'm somewhat sentimentally orientated regarding anything creative...Intuitive sensitive) - I sure would wanted to exhibit the photos (as posters), but to start from scratch? I would need quite an encouragement, and wish that I could stumble across an SLR of some sort, don't have much spare change for such a camera at the moment. Honestly I was an avid impulsive phtography geek years back, now rather subdued and shocked ...hm?!? *quiet*

Take care :)

Thanks for the comment. I'm not an amateur, I'm below this point. There're lot of things I don't know how to do, however I've readed some books and articles to try to get better results but is very difficult for me to apply the things readed in real time... *fit*

About brands, I always thought that once you select your budget, you'll get good results independent of the brand selected. Canon, Nikon, Minolta, Fuji, Olympus, Sony... all have good cameras that are able to take shots better than my tops, so my final decision was: "Buy the same brand whom most of your friends have".

If you have a friend(s) that likes photography, and they have Canon, then buy Canon. Is very simple.

Watching pics at Flickr, there're incredible pics taken with most japanese brands of cameras.

Just one thing: DSRL is your goal if you want good results even with light isn't direct sunlight at 3pm.

My pics about Tuthankamon were shot at ISO 800 and higher, all!.

What has kept me away from digital so far has been the low light capabilities of the digital format.
I like to shoot night shots sometimes using a telephoto lense.
The exposures on film are very long.
Most newer cameras cant meter in almost darkness like an OM-4 can.
But they are getting better.

TheReeler

In digital you always have to exposure for lights, to go to the righest part of the histogram. Then, to pass from RAW format to JPG format (or other, you decrease the exposure and correct the lights. The procedure in digital to get the best results is always to exposure for lights. In analog, you'd exposure for shadows/dark.

I know what you mean, Birding photos can be a challenge. But, if you look at those pics I posted. Only four of the ten were actually taken when the birds were on the serious move.

The picture of the Harris' Hawk was a close up. The handler was holding the bird and he was spreading the wings. He's not flying.

While a well captured action photo is always interesting, I often try to incorporate multiple subjects to make an interesting scenic... For example, the oystercatchers in front of the Tampa skyline with the plane on approach. Or the fog, sun & pelicans swimming....
