i posted a thread on which cd player would be best for my budget of 500.00 to 800.00, the majority said the cambridge audio 640c. i think i can agree with after reading reveiws on it from different sources and your testimonials. i am also looking at the marantz super audio sa8003 i can pick one up new for 825.00 shipped. my problem is there is not a hi fi audio store that sells these products within atleast 300 miles of where i live if that, so i do not have the luxery of being able to listen to them before i buy one. my question is does the sacd sound that much better than a regular cd, i am already dissappionted in my cd player that is what has me on this quest. i dont want to spend that kind of money if it still isnt going to sound as good as my turntable. i need opinions from you folks that have a sacd player and the ones that have had the luxery of listening to them. i know the regular cd has its limitations i hope the sacd is superior in sound. i just wish i could go somewhere and hear them for myself before i purchase one.

thanks mark

SACD does sound good but it all depends on your listening tastes.

If you like classical music, prepare to be impressed. There is a huge selection of titles available if this is your preferred genre.

If you like rock, forget it as there are only a handful of albums available in the SACD format.

Funny as I have a SACD player for sale. Im upgrading.

Anyway SACD is a subtle improvement, but its there. It has air and space around the music that CDs lack. Plus it loses that edgy quality CDs have, assuming it was recorded in anything but PCM. Its a softer kind of sound. More analog like. I have about 30 discs. Some sound better then others. And yes it depends on how good your system is to reveal these subtle differences.

I have about 30 sacd's too. I think they have a very warm sound. I like them. The only one I don't care for too much is "Cheap Thrills" by Big Brother + The Holding Company.

I have a Denon unit (sister brand to Marantz btw) that sounds pretty amazing across the board. SACDs, standard CDs and HDCDs all sound better than my ES or Rotel rigs - especially the standard CDs which demonstrate a marked improvement over "CD only" machine playback. The SACD of Elton John's 'Captain Fantastic' I received from Stuwee sounded way better than I had expected and certainly had a LP-like quality to it.
