I'm still online because the quest for cassette nirvana is on hold till Tuesday evening. I am playing one of the long lost MA-XG's I found in the cassette hoard, recorded long ago. the song is "Breakout"-Swing out Sister. From an LP. I thought someone was at the door, very disturbing thumping sound. I got it figured out it was a warp on the LP that recorded too well on the tape. replayed with the subsonic filter on the Yamaha preamp switched on, it's mostly gone. I know that it's just in the audable range like if I was playing the LP.

So is this just the bane of accurate recording or, am I missing a trick to get rid of this in the future. I have a parametric EQ I could insert in the loop, I'm not able to record yet, is the EQ the way to go, or.....??

No, you just discovered one of the pitfalls of recording. It's indiscriminate. If the LP wasn't cleaned properly or was warped, well, you'll record every detail of that. It sounds like the previous owner did. They developed "click and pop" noise filters later, but they never caught on big. As far as warpage is concerned, it's usually in the low freqs and the only way to get it out is a decent equalizer or a flat record to start with.

That's what I was afraid the answer was gonna be, I have very few warped LP's appearently this was one of them, hence the surprise "wtf was that"?? I'm just happy I didn't damage the uber nice baby AR 4x woofers, these $50 CL lovelies continue to impress the hell outta me more and more. :-)<-:-)<-

I was going to say the same thing.... twice... A) That it was probably the thump of a warped LP and B) That is a great tune from SOS, that I believe, came off there first major release. I got there later efforts... but except for a song or two, the magic was gone.
