Anyone who follows AK may have seen some posts of mine about a bad left channel on my Akai GX-267D. I've had this deck since brand new in 1980 and in the mid-90's the left channel started to go bad. Away the deck went into long-term storage, only to be resurrected last year. The left channel was still bad (huh, go figure) but working with Warren Bendler by e-mail it's fixed now. I have it playing some tapes I recorded back in college (Triumph right now) and it sounds glorious!

Man, when the music is good and the playback is nice, a good r2r sounds like heaven.

Now, what to do with the Sony TC-440 I picked up in the meantime ....

Count me: whoo hoo!!! !jam! *yip**yip**yip*

Great news.... nothing like working on your own gear and being successful. What ended up being wrong??

I second that. Great feeling to be able to fix your own gear.

All the anecdotal tech info said corrosion in the long head changeover switches on the amplifier PCB, operated by the long bar. But I desoldered those and cleaned them 5 ways to Sunday. With some new test equipment (had to borrow a function generator and buy an audio generator) and with Warren's help we tracked the signal thru the amplifier until it ended at TR9 and TR10. So he researched compatible transistors and I bought a bunch, picked 2 closely matched pairs, and replaced the left channel, and then the right to keep the signal gain close to equal on both channels.
