Did Otari ever produce any 10½" metal spools with 'Otari' printed on them?
I like to match a take-up spool with my R2Rs. I have Akai and Teac (both sizes) spools and I'm looking out for a Tascam one now but I've never seen an Otari one.

Yes they did and I believe there's another thread talking about it.
Here it is.

Thanks, Nick.
Any idea where they may be available? The two Otari "dealers" in the UK are useless.

That one I couldn't answer, sorry. I'm having enough trouble with parts here LOL. I'm going to end up creating my own part since otari doesn't seem to have them. Of course you could get creative and make a stencil and paint the reel with there name LOL. Thats what I would do.
You could try MGibney@otari.com. He the otari guy people around here talk to and I have been trying to get his phone number. But I haven't had much luck. I saw it in a thread I was looking at a month or so ago but didn't write it down.
Good luck.

Do they HAVE to be Otari branded? Those might be hard to come by and very expensive. If you have to have the logo, then you don't have a whole lot of options.
On the other hand, if you are merely looking for that STYLE of reel, I know of three alternates that might be easier to find and somewhat cheaper. They are pretty much the same design. Except that one is the original Maxell type, another is generic unmarked (which you could probably stencil whatever you want on), and the third is Denon.
Try looking for these. The Maxell ones appear on a fairly regular basis on the auction site.

Des,
Thanks for the pictures. Maybe I have mild OCD but I would really like just ONE original spool for my MX-55N. How are they made - is it silk-screen printing?
That's a nice X-2000R. I've been playing with my black X-1000M all afternoon which is quite a nice deck. But the Seek To Zero on the Otari is much better - the Teac often 'overshoots' by a second or three which might be by design.
Nick,
The number you want is:

No I don't have the stencil for it. But I'm sure it wouldn't be to tough to make it. If I where to guess there are companies out there that would the silk screen for you too.

Well best of luck on your search. I don't know how good your hobby skills are, but you might be able to sort-of make one by downloading the Otari logo, and laser printing it onto a clear adhesive label and affix it that way. Or maybe even make a decal. Those reels are pretty cool. Here's a closeup of one of the generic unmarked ones.

Oh yeah, they make them. They show up on Ebay about once every other month. One is going to run you $30-$70 USD.

Hey Jay,
I'm looking for a 10 inch take up reel but I don't care what it is.
I was just giving my 2 cents LOL. I'f I really wanted on with a logo and I couldn't find it I would have it silk screened LOL. Or maybe even do it myself.
It's just what I do.

I would be interested if you'll ship to the UK.
Failing that has any ever printed decals for this sort of thing? I've found a company selling water-slide decal paper that you print on a laser or an ink-jet.

I've seen two different styles of Otari-badged reels. The earlier one has 'Otari Electric Co. Ltd.' around the outermost part of the flange (no pix, sorry). I think that was changed to the blue Otari logo on the flange (what you usually see) around 1979.

I think I would like the older one, just me though.
But if were to guess there probably hard to come by and pricey.

Here's a couple of pictures of the newer Otari reels. Yeah, the older type reels were quite nice, one of these days I'll have to get one...

Yes, Otari did make them. Included with new MX 5050 B II machines in the box. I lack a 10 1/2" takeup reel (I'm using a friend's right now). PM me if you have a spare (doesn't have to be Otari logoed). *reelspin*
