Hi tapeheads!

Great website you have here!! Just bought myself a NOS Denon DRM-595 and have rediscovered the wonderful world of cassette. Probably the best £15 I have ever spent on hi-fi! Haven't used tape seriously since the early 90s so expect me to be asking lots of questions over the coming weeks as I learn how to get the best out of this wonderful format *reelspin**reelspin*.

Mike.

A couple of weeks ago there was a thread on cheap UX-S and UX-Pro in the UK.
It was like 33p per piece.

Picked up 9 Maxell UR for £3. Probably not the best quality but can't hurt to have them and should be good enough for recording stuff off the radio, and at least I know there is somewhere I can get cheap tapes literally on my doorstep. *thumbsup*Haven't seen any UX-S or UX-Pro but will keep my eyes peeled. Only decent tapes available in any great quantities round these parts are TDK SA-90s (79p each from Richer Sounds).

Think I'll have a look for that UX-Pro thread now ...

Hello Audiolad,

Great that you're here.

What are you listening to and tell us which cassettes prove most elusive.

I can buy Maxell UR, "original UR" (don't know what the difference is), TDK FE, D (I think I saw it somewhere) and Sony HF tapes locally.

To me they all sound about the same (didn't try the original UR yet), but it may be because my deck has auto tape calibration and can adjust itself to a particular tape.

TDK FE, however, is very noisy (my deck is quite noisy by itself) and I had to use dbx NR to record on it (otherwise it may only suit modern heavily compressed music with a lot of high frequencies to mask the hiss).

I like TDK SA tapes, but can only buy them on ebay.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys *Hi5*

Have learnt a lot from this forum so far! At the moment I have located some Maxell URs, an old-style Maxell UR (green, red, and white wrapper with thicker case), a few TDK SA90s, a couple of Fuji JP-XII and a Fuji DR.

So far I have been most impressed by the Fuji, especially the DR as I was not hoping for much from a Type 1 tape but copied a favourite LP just to check out the quality and it was almost indistinguishable from the master *check*. Gonna have to pick up some more of those babies.

And even better, mentioned to my dad that I had just bought a tape deck and he reckons he has some unused chrome tapes lying about he's gonna dig out for me. Don't know what age or brand but *hope*

Another welcome wish, audiolad.

Coincidentally, I used some Fuji DR-1 tapes yesterday to record Led Zeppelin's How the West was Won and was very pleased with the audio quality. It's the first time I've used this make/model tape and would recommend it to others with this caveat: keep the peak levels below +3dB.
