Yes, headphones, cans, What's your favorite and why? Comfort level vs. quality, etc....

Mine were the AKG-K340 electrostatic/dymanic headphones. I Loved the sound, Doh! Just like wearing 'Logans on your head, kind of.... Well, I had the headphones before the 'Logans so maybe that's where I got to liking the lightning fast highs and mids with the deep bass*check* I was drunk one night and got sick of the bass cutting out on one of the sides, and I threw them away chucked 'em in the garbage *fit*. Dumb*butt* stuwee, probably an easy fix too. Another thing I covet that rarely comes up for sale.
Well, lookie what the Price of admission is now! http://cgi.ebay.com/AKG-K340-Headphones-K-340-audiophile-Hi-End-PRO_W0QQitemZ120284318567QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item1 20284318567&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318
This seller has a lot of tasty goodies as well!

I'd like to know what ya'll think I could get by with for under That staggering amount. Yes, I'd like to relive my youth with the AKG's but, this is what they sell for when they show up. I would like to see what ya'll think is a great earspeaker. Quality and Clarity over comfort, No Pain, No Gain*Hi5* What do you use?

I never use headphones as they give me head aches. I do use earbuds when walking my dog though.

AKG is what I've been using for years too. I got some K240 Monitor's from circa late 1980's that still sound great. Very faithful reproduction. Years ago I had some impressive Rat Shack electrostatic's that disappeared at one of my infamous parties of the 1970's.

We don't have any music shops with 'phones in this here cowtown, I heard the K240's years ago, I liked the 340's better, haven't heard the II's I'm gonna have to go on reviews, and buy online, I hate that! I had an Idea *idea* after I started the thread.

I'm going to that Studio to get the a-ha DVD soon, I'll check out what they use. If I likey, I'll buy. I've not had head phones in quite a while. Maybe I could knock offf the crack heads and get the $400 for the AKG's... Nah, bad karma

Yamaha YH-2 Orthodynamics. Very confy, superb range including low bass, never gave me headaches or felt too heavy. The strap/headpiece wa sprobably the most comfortable I ever wore. I still have them, but I need to repair some parts due to age deterioration....

If I am to take the subject literally, there are only few to choose from.

I use the ERGO2.
ERGO (http://www.precide.ch/eng/eergo/ergo.htm) makes a series of Headspeakers from ERGO1 to ERGO AMT. (Air Motion Transformer)

AKG made the AKG K-1000 (http://cimg2.163.com/digi/wm/060419/AKG/K1000.jpg).

Stax (http://www.stax.co.jp/Export/ExportProducts.html) makes the SR 202/303/404 series.

A few other brands are on the idea of making speakers for wearing on your head.

The rest is plain Headphones.
I use BeyerDynamic DT-880 and Sennheiser 650 for that.

I prefer my ERGO2 above the others.

The advantage from earspeakers instead of earphones is, among other stuff, that they can facilitate the stage of room that normal earphones all just bring flat.

If I were to choose headphones (not to mistake with earspeakers) today, it would be the AKG K-701 on a tube amp.

Wow! And I thought the AKG's were expensive, the ERGO's are through the roof, very nice nice, very well respected, I'll take 2 of them, please....speaking of begging, the auction is over for the AKG's in 6hrs, I'll take donations Big-> :D

Quick question, Since some of these 'phones need, energizers/step-up tramsformers to work and Europe and other parts of the world use 220/240 voltage, could you just wire the 'phones to the speaker outputs? I've heard you can use home speaker with our 120 amps, or, are headphones wired differently?

Most comfortable I've used were the Sennheiser HD555s. Sold em though, not enough detail to me.

Solved that problem- I now use Grado Sr325i's. VERY edgy top-end, maybe too much for some, but I love detail monsters. Paired with my Little Dot tube amps they sound...right. With SS they are a bit much however.

The K240s were my mainstay for a while--great cans. Mine are the 600 ohms ones which mate well with my ancient integrated amp headphone out's. *check*

I have tried many different phones and had to use them in the recording studio for decades. I always hated using them but it was a necessity so I made the best of it.

A few months ago I was at an estate sale and saw a Sennheiser sending unit on top of a tv and started looking for the headset. I found a pair of HDR110s in the box priced at $10.00. Not a bad price for a lightly used set, not their best, but not bad.

I found them to be a quite good set with acceptable sound and comfort. I have begun to use them as my choice and haven't tired of them yet!!

Stuwee,

Have you ever heard the AKG 271 headphones? They are sealed compared to the 240II partly open enclosure and there is only a $30 difference between the two of them. The specs are slightly better on the 271 as well.

Nope never heard either, and, probably can't, no one sells them down here, I did hear the early 240's and they just didn't cut it for me, and back in the day the 340's were only $100 more, there was no comparison in the sound to my ears, the 340's having the 'stats unreal realisim, speed, and the dynamic woofer seemlessly intergrated.

I have no b'ness being judgemental of 'phones as I have no $$'s, I might just have to get the 271's sight unheard, and with my luck a pair of 340's will show up with a BIN of $100 *headache**fit*

Well headphones are not really my thing, but I do own a cheap pair of Koss phones. My speakers are way better so I listen to them mostly, but from time to time I need to use my headphones for whatever so I keep them around. They sound great for $25 bucks.

I'm the opposite, Jc. My listening rooms could all use treatment, so, while my speakers are probably better too, the cans just sound better.

I don't own any real "cans." The closest thing I have is a headphone/mic combo from Plantronics. I bought it for skype and games, not necessarily audio quality. They're alright, but I don't really like them better than my Sony MDR-G42s. The Sonys are certainly not audiophile-grade by any stretch of the imagination, but for $15 or less, you simply cannot buy a better sounding, more durable pair of headphones for "active duty." The only problem I can find with them is that if you have a decently large noggin they'll probably be pretty tight, and they don't seem to loosen up with time.

here's my set of cans, a 1982 Rat-Shack model; REALISTIC NOVA PRO. excellent sounding phones that i paid $2.00 for at a local privately owned thrift. nonetheless, i dream of replacing them with a good set of PIONEERs...
