Let me try to explain whats going on,I have my Favorite 1976 Tehnics SL 1700 had it since new,a while back its seems that Every record I play has static some more than others depending on how decent the Vinyl is,,I have switched every cartridge I have including
Signet TK5E
Shure M97XE
Audio Tecnica AT14SA
Stanton D61
all having about the same Results,,the Stanton was the quietest probablly because it,s the least expensive, but all have a static ,,Now I switch TTs and plug in a Yamaha YD3 ,,and do the same ,,90% of the noise goes away,,same amp,and pre,,just switched TTs,,spec wise the TTs are Similar Direct Drive etc so what do you guys think is my problem

could be a grounding problem, or corroded connection..

there may be oxidation somehwere with the grounding wire or with the cabling.

you can rule out motor noise by leaving the power off and spinning the record by hand. with motor noise eliminated, it has to be a ground or connection issue. try deox on the connector where the headshell screws in. if there is a switch that disconnects the signal while the arm is in motion, a little deox there may cure the problem.

Well I think I found the Problem,,Evidently the last guy who did some work on the deck( arm Return Problem) broke the circuit board that the RCA and Ground wire connect to,,the tiny ground wire is connected to the screw that holds the circuit board in Place the wire broke when he broke the circuit board,,I am going to use a clear epoxy to glue the circuit board back together and then Maybe find a different way to attach the ground wire ,,and hope that works,,but just in case that fails,,WHO deals in new or used Technics TT Parts,,,,I,m on e-pray and craigs list looing for a beater but I want to get this deck back on line asap

is there a different screw hole you could use to attach the ground wire?

no the ground wire and the and rca connectors are attached to the circuit board ,,then a piece of copper wire is soldered on to the circuit board and attached to the screw,, I don,t know what signicance attaching the ground wire makes to the circuit board but i thought of splicing a new ground wire to the original and bypassing the circuit and just attaching it to the screw

a picture would really help, but it would seem to me as long as the circuit is grounded to the chassis, and the wire is grounded to the chassis, everything should be well.

Hi Robert,

Congratulations on the repair! So, you're off to NASA. I think their priority should be to hire some good pipefitters first... those damn O-rings!

Take care,

Nando.

Glad to hear you got it repaired, you might in the future consider replacing the phono cables and the ground, my old Thorens was a much happier TT after replacing the old phono cables, you can even modify and put RCA's from the arm (or board) to the back of the TT so you can change cables if so desired, it does add one more connection in the stream but not a bad one.

That is a pretty good price for 1200 m k5D if it is really in like new condition.

That part you described for yours sounds like where the ground wire gets mounted in the 1200 series decks, too...

Well maybe some of FF's epoxy is in order to seal that BIG hole. *grin* Don't let Stuwee do it though, or it might not be the epoxy that seals it.
