View Full Version : I bought them out!

I took today off from work & went to Eggers Audio & bought out their entire supply of cassettes, which consisted entirely of seven 4-packs of Denon HD8 100 minute cassettes. They were the last place in town that I know of that still sold type II cassettes. Man, 15 years ago, there was such a good choice of stores & tapes that I can hardly believe how good it was back then.

Maybe they will get more or have more in the back room? Did you ask them?

No, I'm pretty sure that was it. When I told them I'd buy them all, I'm sure he would have mentioned if there were more in the back room. He asked me what kind of deck I have & I told him I had a Teac A-103, which he remembered from way back when. Said he thinks he may have owned one back in the day.

And thanks to my fellow tapehead here I will be partaking of a few of these as well.

You & some of the others are getting away cheap; take a look at what one guy is asking for BIN:

Geez, that means each of those 4-packs I bought for $12 are worth $30...at least, according to this guy. I wonder if the reserve will be met?

I love the name of his Ebay store, too, "RealDeals&Steals". Yeah, $8.99 for 1 blank Memorex, or $3.99 for a blank Certron. Brand new, current TDK D 60 for $3.29 EACH! Oooo, those real deals! How ridiculous.

Hey NAD, I love the e-bay link, I've never seen the "floating gallery" before, fun stuff.

I for one am GLAD you bought them out and kept them within the family of the faithful. Rock on!

Woo-hoo! Can't wait to hear one. I assume you still haven't had a chance to try any yet?

I'm probably going to try it out tonight. Haven't decided what kind of music to record on it, though.

Ah, the days of choice, plentiful supply, and picking up a few wherever you happened to be .... gone. We've all become hoarders as our river dwindles to a slow and gasping stream to become a trickle in time.....

I don't disagree with that assessment, but let's put it into perspective here.
Let's take the stash or "hoard" of Yours Truly here. For sake of illustration, let's say it's 300 blanks of assorted brands and makes (I do not have an actual number but 300 is IMO a realistic estimate). If I were to wipe it completely out by distributing it evenly to all 150 members of TH, that comes out to ONLY two tapes per person.

A 'hoard' would be eradicated, but at two tapes per person, would hardly make much difference.

So the issue isn't really so much of a hoarding mentality so much as they are no longer in production. There just isn't enough to go around anymore. And what few offerings are still made new, few of us want. And of the 'good' NOS that's out there, the quantities are still gradually shrinking as they slowly get used up. If an equilibrium is to be reached, either demand needs to be reduced. Or else we all need to band together and successfully petition one or more of the majors to restart production of an audiophile grade tape.

So are you suggesting we do this? I like the idea, and I don't mean to sound like a pessimist, but I'm not too confident it would work at this point.

Just a thought--

In the late 1990s, a photography site named photoimpex.de posted a web survey about 127 roll film, an older film size (one discontinued by Kodak in 1995.) Visitors to the site were queried to see if they would purchase new 127 film: the results were such that 127 has made a minor comeback in availability, with black-and-white, infrared, and color negative film for sale from web vendors.

If the demand is there, anything is possible. Here's hoping!

(I'd like to see the return of XL-IIs...)

If someone wants to articulate a well written petition that we can all sign, absolutely do it. I've considered writing something.

Why not? What would we have to lose?

But I agree that it's not *LIKELY* to be a success. But you never know unless you try. I commented on that here:

http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=428

So who wants to take it on?

And no. I am not offering any 'additional' tapes for this Saturdays contest. The stakes are already set to one person could potentially clear as many as four items.
