A superb sixteen track release from Los Lobos that is testament to their musicianship, songwriting and studio craft.
Whether the band deliberately set out to push their artistic boundaries or not I can't say although they have achieved it in some style.
Forget about stereotypes for this is simply a great rock record with soul aplenty; nothing less nothing more. I'd love to see a manifest of the instruments used here as I'm sure there's a dozen or so I haven't heard of - but these guys can play them and don't use the effect as a novelty fill to pad out a song. As a recording it is full of surprise and delight, top tracks being, "Dream In Blue, Wake Up Delores, Angels With Dirty Faces and Saint Behind The Glass"
I think they've almost accidentally created an alternative Latin rock genre here, the songs having an experimental/psychedelic feel to them. The record that this most reminds me of, inexplicably so, is the Neville Brothers "Yellow Moon"
Sparkling production to boot.
I think MFSL missed the boat when they released "Good Morning Aztlan" and overlooked "Kiko"
Incidentally, "Kiko" was given a limited edition vinyl pressing and is very sought after, so if you chance upon a copy snap it up.
