I'm gonna bring you over to the "Dark Side" of parametrics, unless you just like the pretty lights, then we'll see about a sound board, I'll try to get some pics of the recording studio I'm going to after the Post Office!! BraHaaHaaHaahaha!

if it's in excellent cosmetic condition, and the price is right, i'd definitely be interested! i can always get the remote from WWW.REMOTES.COM and i believe PIONEER still has the manual available, so you might just actually be able to help me get my system one step closer to perfection! truly, other than a GR-777, i am also on the beat for a PIONEER DV-09 DVD Player and i am also caught between two cassette decks, the CT-S800, or the CT-91/91a. after i settle those, my ideal dream system would definitely be complete! i hope this pans out, as i currently have an AKAI seven band EQ with dual display. while it does the job nicely, i couldn't replace it with a GR-777 fast enough...

Here's mine, not the fancy one with the pre-sets, they never show up for sale, and for good reason too!

those SAEs are nice, especially the ebay one, IMO. but my heart is set on a junky GR-777. 90% of the time i only use an EQ as a spectrum display anyhow, and the triple-seven has my favorite display of all...

Anyone compare these late 80s units to earlier passive units with no displays? Do they sound any better then these later flashy units?

The lights have nothing to do with sound quality. There are no passive EQs; these are all 'active'. The standard analog EQ(BTW, the Pioneer GR-777 is also analog; it simply has a more complicated internal system with electronic control modules to operate by button and remote control) graphic type does not offer precise adjustment. Typically when you adjust a band, it has a substantial effect on neighboring bands. More sophisticated studio / professional graphic EQs typically use 'constant Q' topography, offering more precision to adjust the intended band without interference of the neighboring one. The best EQs today, though, are digital(DSP). You don't even have to spend much for a superb digital EQ today. Behringer's DEQ2496 offers top notch performance for roughly $300, and offers very high precision adjustments, with many EQ types(shelving, graphic, parameteric) available. It also offers both digital and analog inputs/outputs.

The Pioner GR-777 mentioned above was one of the better/best graphic EQs available in the early 90's sold for home use. It offers very good noise performance, very low distortion and has very good build quality. Here is a link where I demonstrate specific setting of a GR-777 vs. actual measured response and I also provide the same for a high quality low price DSP based EQ:

Hi Jo6Pak,

Welcome aboard! Usually, any component in as good as original condition, appearance-wise and operationallly, with the original packing carton, Operating Manual, accessories including remote control ( in this case) can be worth as much as half of the original retail price of back in 1988.

You will have to formally introduce yourself and your muff-toting avatar girls.

i haven't received the unit yet, since i just purchased it yesterday, but i did locate the manual online. one thing that it appears to be lacking is an input/output main level control. do these guyz have unity gain?

unable, so far, to find a remote control for it (not included in the sale). not sure it is something i would ever use anyway, but like to keep things consistent...

Hi Jo,

After looking at the OM from hifiengine, it seems there is no input/output level control. I have a Pioneer SG-90, which is older, and it has both controls. It's possible you may find a used Pioneer component remote control in the thrift stores. Although it won't be the specific remote for the GR-777, it will work.

well, at this point its inconsequential, since i've added a dbx compressor/limiter to the backside of the sig chain and that unit has output levels for each channel.

thanks for your input, btw...

well, it appears as though my GR777 is no longer holding the saved settings between sessions. it has happened a few times lately, even though the unit stays plugged into the mains.

before i disconnect and tear into it, was wondering if anyone knows if there is a battery inside that needs to be changed?

THANKS!

EDIT: nevermind - pioneer support sez there is no memory battery...
