I've found that easy listening/orchestral pop (Jackie Gleason, Percy Faith, etc...) is the best kind of music to record on type I cassettes. It seems to have a nice, smooth sound. Maybe that's because of the way that kind of music was recorded back then, 1950's & 60's, I don't know. Right now I'm listening to George Shearing w/his Quintet & Orchestra on a Fuji DR-I & it sounds fantastic.

You've hit upon an old standard. Type I tape was always preferred for classical recordings since a live orchestra isn't bass heavy, but does have decent (but not extended) trebles. Perfect for a Type I.

I used to record the majority of the music I have on type II no matter what it was. Chrome tapes were the thing for me then. Only the stuff I didn't care about a lot, or wasn't too challenging to the tape like old Beatles music- were put on type 1s. I didn't often use metal tapes until later in my years and were usually from CDs.

Today I'm more selective of what I use and have learned what each tape type is good at doing. Im actually using more type 1s now, albeit high grade 1s, on more of my tapes lately. I use them to color the sound more.
