Hi All,

Earlier this week I took delivery of a ZX 9 that mechanically seems to be in fantastic shape but the case (sides and top) are a bit beat up. I'm considering removing the cover and refinishing it, but I'd like to keep it as close to the factory finish as possible. Anyone know of any off the shelf product that can come close to duplicating the original finish?

BTW this is my first post to this forum. I've been a Nak fan ever since my parents installed an all Nak system in their car in 1985 (TD400, PA150, SP40s, SP200s) and a few years later replaced their vintage Marantz/Teac system with a TA2a and CR3a. At 13 years old I spent HOURS playing with that deck trying to get the best sounding tapes I could. Its fun going back through my collection and listening to the tapes I made as a kid. They sound a bit "off." lol But that CR3 is responsible for the audiophile I am today.

Anyway, my plan for the ZX 9 is to use it to make recordings off my Linn turntable for use in the car...assuming I can locate a TD700 (I'm not holding my breath). In the mean time I'm just having too much fun playing back my tape collection I haven't listened to in years. I can't believe how good some of these tapes sound on this machine. The ZX 9 is proof positive you CAN polish a turd!

TTFN,
Adam

Hi Tubzrulz, I don't know about the original Nakamichi finish but I do know that one of the best ways to tidy up black paint on electronics in general is to use Plastikote Matt black spray paint. I've seen even very rough metalwork painted with this and it has come out looking like new.

It might be worth getting some and trying it on a cheap piece of kit first. Here's an idea; Buy something really cheap on eBay that is cosmetically a little rough, try re-painting with Plastikote, and you might even be able to resell for a modest profit!

Hi Adam Welcome to TH, Mig's advice is spot on! You could also experiment with some nice automotive finishes, maybe a flame job :)! No, scratch that, you want an original finish, I got carried away.....but it gives me an *scratchchin*, my BX-300 looks a little understated beneath the Denon, some flames would be cool, kinda like Jerry Lee Lewis's piano...*devil*

You may want to look at some auto shops for powder coating ideas, tough, durable, scratch resistant forever!

Check Naktalk. I think I saw something there about exact paint codes for the box finish.
