Recently discovered this site through a comment over on Vinyl Asylum. I've been reading through the various threads for a week or so, and find that there are some great resources here.

I'm a long time audiophile (former audio sales rep back in the '70's), and long time member of audiogon.com, vinyl asylum, and other boards.

Still have a lot of NOS tapes from my days in the industry (large stock of unused tdk, sony, maxell, ampex, and scotch reels, and ditto with regard to lots of sony, maxell, tdk, and other, cassette tapes).

A Revox A77 (mkIV), and a Tandberg 3014 are my current decks. My complete system(s) can be viewed via the audiogon.com site (inmate systems), under the same 'bruckner9' handle.

I own several high end turntables (currently; 17....but the Roksan's are my favs!), and am still collecting vinyl (over 10,000 lp's). Also own over 3,000 cd's, but they're mounted (purposely! lol) on racks on a wall, well above my vinyl (about 10 high...need a ladder to access), as I rarely play them! lol

Glad to be aboard here!

bruckner9 (and yeah, the handle is a tribute to Anton Bruckner)

Welcome! Whereabouts in SoCal are you at?

I am a SoCal native myself, these last several years being in Placentia (Orange County). But those days are just about to draw to a close as I am relocating to the Central Valley (Tulare) in just days now.

Glad you found us. Look around. See something you like. Add to it. We're a great bunch.

Hello bruckner9,

From the same coast, just north of you. Welcome... and exactly how big of a room is needed to store all those LPs, CDs, and other formats. You've got enough vinyl to side a friggin' house! The basic rundown you've given of your gear tells me you've lots to tell...or, perhaps retell.

Take care,

Nando.

Likewise, thanks for the warm welcome here!

By the looks of things, lots of hard work has gone into the making of this site, and everybody seems to be having a great time here! (And Des, I'm over here in LB.)

Although I've got a lot of audio equipment and NOS tape, I'm not yet up to speed on which tapes are the more 'preferred', etc, and....I've not done any serious comparisons of my own in several years (been busy playing LP's! lol). I'm reading through a lot of the threads here and learning a lot about pricing, availability, performance, and collectiblity, etc, so again, the various resources on this site are much appreciated!

Well yeah, I've got a story....or two....to tell (someday)! lol

As for the vinyl...I use Ikea Expedit units to store them, and have them spread out over three rooms (someday I'll get a pic up here!).

Now don't get mad at me, but....in addition to living here in So Cal, where used LP's are as cheap as anywhere (from what I've seen), my wife works for the city library system...and gets one or two people a month coming into the place wanting to donate their 'old, unused' LP's. Problem is (as she readily admits to them), the library can't use them...so...since the people never seem to wanna carry them back home, they leave them in her possession. And since nobody else there wants them, she brings them home...to me! And sometimes (hell, MOST of the time!) it's great stuff, in fabulous condition. I can't tell you how many mint condition Living Stereo's, Columbia 6-eye's, Deccas, London Blue-Backs, et al, that she's brought home.

(See; sometimes it pays to be married! lol)

And btw....judging from the pics I've seen in some of these threads, many of you cats have some serious (*and quite impressive!) blank tape collections!

"dr.bo" has more blank tape stashed on shelves than there are people in tucson, arizona! lol (bro; how the hell did you acquire that much tape? lol)

I'm a Bruckner fan also. Ever been to St. Florian in Austria where he's buried? Whom do you like as your favorite Bruckner conductor? Eugen Jochum? Gunter Wand? I have a great set of all nine symphonies by GW. Any comments?

bruckner9
06-20-2009, 03:42 PM
Well, let's see here; upon last count, i have over 735 bruckner recordings (spread out between CD and LP).

Among the complete sets are Barenboim, Haitink (both sets, earlier/later Phillips), von Karajan (EMI and both DGG sets), Jochum (both EMI and DGG), Tintner, Von Matacic, Inbal, and many more.

Also have the partials by Mehta, Bernstein, Klemperer, Walter, Van Beinum, et al (sure wish Van Beinum had recorded all 9, but alas, only got around to numbers 4, 7, 8, and 9), and pretty much anything anyone else ever did.

My fav: Number 8. To me, it is THEE single greatest piece of musical architecture ever penned (ok, other than the Eroica! LOL)

And as for 'sets', I like several different versions and recordings by different people, thus do not have a single 'set' preference.

If push came to shove, I suppose I'd grab the individual Guilini/Vienna Phil 8th, the first HVK DGG 8th recording, the Van Beinum 7th, the Guilini/Vienna 9th, the Klemperer 5th, the Szell 3rd, and the Wand (live) 8th.

But again, I like individual movements of many different recordings, and frankly, would cull individual portions of several different recordings to put together a 'satisfactory' recording of a Bruckner 4th (e.g. HVK's EMI First Movement; Klemperer's EMI Second Movement, Barenboim's Chicago DGG Third Movement, and HVK's DGG (first) DGG Finale.)

btw....despite my inclusion of the Barenboim Chicago third movement there, I generally do NOT like that band for Bruckner. As thrilling (brash, bold, bombastic) as they are for Mahler....their 'sound' does NOT work for Bruckner (which NEEDS creamy, homogeneous, flowing texture). The exception made here is to accommodate Herseth, Clevenger, Jacobs, et al (the Chicago Brass) for their stunning execution of the Scherzo in what is a 'stinging' recording!.

I think I'd go with Nr. 4, "Romantische", but people like what they like. I agree with your assessments regarding comparisons between Mahler and Bruckner. (Bruckner hated bombastic readings of his work and hated even more being compared to Wagner.) He asked to be buried right under the organ at the St. Florian monastery because he liked the calmness there, and if you go there and the organist is rehearsing for the Sunday Mass, you can hear that faint calm there that he was talking about. It's really cool!

The Eroica is more Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress), right? Bruckner is hohe Romantik (High Romanticism)--two very different style periods.

Don't know if I could single out one work as THE GREATEST, but again, ya likes what ya likes!

See if No1Maestro will chime in! His record collection is still...well...the fairest of 'em all.

hello Tucson stuwee.

i visit tucson every year for spring training, and still LOVE hi corbett park!

and yeah, the bruckner 4th is nice to listen to (the slow movement is heaven!), but it's pop music compared to the 8th, in terms of form and development. the finale of the 4th, even after MANY revisions, is still a mess.

btw....contrast that with the finale of his 5th Symphony, which is a complete, total masterpiece in every way.

and i mentioned the Eroica strictly for the sake of reference (equality) in terms of form, but otherwise of course is 'from a different era', to be sure.
