View Full Version : Otari MX-5050 B3-2 Manuals source?

Hi. I just bought an Otari MX-5050 B3-2, with stand. It seems to be in decent shape - physically the only real issue is some scratching around the splicing block on the head cover, which is to be expected. The S/N indicates that the deck is from 1997.

This deck didn't come with any manuals. I found and downloaded a MX-5050 BII user's manual from the net, which is helpful, but what I'd really like would be the user's and service manuals (or at least a schematic) for my deck. I'd like to POOGE the recording and playback amps (upgraded caps and opamps, and power supply tweaks), but I'll need the circuit info to do that.

Does anyone have a source for these manuals? Otari has some pdf manuals on its website, but none for my deck. Pdfs or xeroxes would be fine.

BTW, my deck is 2 track only. But I also located a headstack from a MX-5050 B2 which has 2 track record & PB and 4 track PB. It looks like the B2 headstack should be a more or less drop in replacement for the stock B3 one. If it isn't, it looks fairly straightforward to swap the 4 track head and switch onto the B3 stack - the mounting plate and PCB appear to have provision for this. I'll let the group know how this goes.

Thanks!

Hi Bob,

I have some of the Otari info that you are looking for. You can contact me direct (check your private messages). There is also a great online source for any kind of manual but I do not know if he has the BIII http://www.stereomanuals.com/

BII/MKII headstacks will plug right in without any problem and are interchangeable. It sounds like you have picked up an nice machine!

[QUOTE=bobschneider;3438]Hi. I just bought an Otari MX-5050 B3-2, with stand.

Any chance you could post a picture of it including the stand? Otari lists a "Pedestal Stand" as an available option, I'm curious as to what it looks like...presumably a floor-standing type of stand?

Thanks and Cheers!

The stand is quite nice. It's made of rectangular steel - an inverted T section on each side, and a crossbar. It's on heavy duty casters which makes it easy to move. The tape deck is attached to the stand with bolts on each side, which let you adjust the deck to vertical, horizontal, or an angle. It's a really solid stand.
