Congratulations TH'ers! You all did it. I promised that as soon as we cross two thresholds, 100+ members *AND* an average of 50 or more posts per day for 30 consecutive days, I'd hold a [new] Name Those Tunes contest.

Well. We have crossed both boundaries. We are now up to 152 members (the other two being myself) and as of yesterday, have averaged 71 posts per day for the last 30 days.

So I believe it's time to host the first TapeHeads.Net "Name Those Tunes" contest.

Many of you are current or former AK'ers, where the contest was born. So for you, you should remember the rules. In case you forgot, and as a service to the new folks, let me just review them for you.

I will post the contest in the form of a post, simply titled "Here's The Name Those Tunes" contest during the time period to be announced below.

In it will be attached some links to YouTube Videos of my system playing. The first person to correctly identify the artist and title of *ALL* songs playing will win one of the prize items shown. That's it. There is nothing to buy, no futher obligation of any kind. As long as you reside within the United States, I'll even SHIP it to you for free. So there will be no bait and switch "win a free tape, just pay shipping" games. Non-US TH'ers are certainly invited and welcome to play. But because of the substantially higher shipping and customs charges, I would ask that I be reimbursed for the shipping.

So here are the details:

1. The contest will be posted next Saturday July 19, 2008 sometime between the hours of 9AM and 12PM Pacific Time. Please be sure to check your time zone and calculate the plus or minus hours accordingly.

2. The contest will consist of 11 (eleven) video clips of a song playing. One song will be an "instant win": First person to identify the artist and title of it will win their choice of prizes shown. The next seven clips will be the "main" contest. First person to correctly identify the artist and title of ALL SEVEN of those songs can also claim a win to any one item. And the last three clips will be "Bonus" songs: If someone wins the main round of all seven songs, they can claim an additional prize for any one or all three of each bonus song correctly identified.

3. The time limit on the contest will be twenty four hours (one calendar day) from the timestamp shown on the initial contest post, or whenever all available winnings have been claimed. Whichever comes first.

4. All entries and responses to the contest MUST be posted in the form of a public response to the contest post. Entries submitted via e-mail, private message, or hidden message will not be eligible to win; regardless of their accuracy.

5. It is strongly recommended that you do not post 'partial' replies. If you don't know more than...say...four of the songs, just SAY that you "only know four songs". Do not help someone else possibly claim a win they might otherwise not deserve by posting only partial responses. They can then take your answers, combine them with others, and their own and claim victory-even though they may not have legititmately known every song.

6. The musical selections this time around will be varied. Selections will include Classic Rock, 70's, 80's, and 90's music. Other styles that may be included will be Oldies, Easy Listening, Adult Contemporary, and Trance/Electronica. So the more knowledgable in music you are, the better your chances of winning.

7. I am the sole judge of this contest and my decisions will be final. I reserve the right to prematurely cancel the contest and/or refuse to award prizes if I have reasonable cause to suspect cheating-including-but not limited to-posting the links in other forums and the poster asking other board participants to identify the songs for you. This contest will be honest and fair. And I expect all participants to play accordingly: a test of your own existing musical expertise.

So what will the prizes be? Well. Take a gander at what TapeHeads will have up for grabs:

1. A sealed/NOS roll of Maxell XLI 35-180B 10" X 3600' reel to reel tape.
2. A sealed/NOS roll of Maxell UD 35-180 10" X 3600' reel tp reel tape.
3. A virgin/NOS roll of Quantegy #457 10" X 3600' "pancake".
4. A beautiful unused/unblemished Maxell empty 10" "Double M" metal reel.
5. This gorgeous, mint condition 10" metal reel filled with a virgin+leadered roll of Quantegy #457 3600' tape.
6. A NOS/sealed two-pack of "Reel-Cleer" purple C-60 reel to reel cassette tapes.

So start listening! And we'll see you all next week for the first of [hopefully] many Name Those Tunes contests here on TapeHeads!

And for those of you who are still on AK and they miss them, feel free to tell everyone (these contests were a huge hit there) that the contests are back. But they need to join TH to play.

Ready! I've been listening to stuff for days, trying out new equipment and stuff!*Hi5**reelspin*

How can Rat44 play? It should be open to all without cheating, of course.

Well. He's going to have to get a new sound card and/or speakers. Or else play from a different computer. That's an individual computer/setup issue that I have no control over. Apart from that, I believe I've already rigged the contest for the fairest possible play. I have posted seven days notice. I don't know what more reasonable steps I could've taken.

Well , I guess my wife will have to share her computer.
She plays games on hers so I know the sound works.

A handicap, eh? Hmmm....wouldn't everyone love to be able to bet on the roulette wheel AFTER the ball stops? *hope*

I dunno. What do you have in mind?

The choices for all eleven songs have been frozen, filmed, and are pending [private] upload. They came from a pool of about thirty choices. Most likely, many of those will be used for a future contest.

Would you like to know what candidates did NOT make the cut this time? If I decide to use them again, you might have a bit of an edge.

Or donate to the site. Generously. And maybe I'll tell you in advance what the songs are. ;-!!

But that would send any credibility and perception of fairness I have basically down the gutter. And would likely royally piss off a LOT of TH'ers. So it would have to be a TREMENDOUSLY generous "donation". More along the lines of a "grant".

And BTW, I will be closing the music forum to non-registered guests during the time the contest is running.

Just FYI. Closing 'that' loophole as well.

Matt: Are these new songs you have recorded or will some old AK videos be returning on this site? I would guess the former to be fair.

Too bad Im not good at guessing the songs you've done before.

What would be "fair" about recycling songs/videos that have already been used-and the answers given? :-?

Sure, it might make it EASIER but not necessarily "fair".

All new songs have been chosen and videos filmed.

Like I said. It's all about what you know and how well you know it. Not trying to exhume past 'used' ones.

I guess it wouldn't do any hurt to tell you what the STYLES will be, inasmuch as all selections are now decided and in place:

The INSTANT WIN song is 80's rock.

In the MAIN ROUND, they will be:

#1: 80's rock
#2: Late 60's or early 70's Easy Listening
#3: 70's "soft" rock
#4: 80's Glam/Hard rock
#5: Late 70's "New Wave"
#6: 70's Classic Rock
#7: 80's Rock

And the BONUS SONGS will be:

#1: 90's Alternative
#2: 70's Disco
#3: 80's New Wave

Just to warn ya'll, and in the name of true sportsmanship, I've got it all sewn up. Except for "#2: Late 60's or early 70's Easy Listening" *liar**stirpot*

Good luck all*hope*
