Have any of you seen this cassette deck this guy on AK has?

Omega? Really? It looks like a crappy deck, IMHO. He could probably get a decent 2nd hand Teac or some other brand for $30 that would be more reliable & would be easier to have serviced. I've got to think there are a few other brands better than Omega.
Am I right, or am I out of line?

Wow. In all my years, I've never even HEARD of "Omega".
And judging from the looks of it, doesn't appear to be what you'd call a "high end" deck. Funny you should mention Teac. Because that's what it looks like it's a knock-off of.
I agree with you 100%. That anyone who wants good, trouble free sound NEEDS to invest UPFRONT in some quality gear. Often times that means spending more than $30.
But remember. This is your typical AK'er we're discussing here. So their mental flow might go something like this.
Imagine an AK'er at a yard sale or thrift shop perusing a deck and haggling with the seller:
AK BUYER: "What is this?"
Seller: "It's a brand new, mint in box Nakamichi Dragon. Perhaps the most world renowned audiophile cassette deck ever made. I was able to get a hold of Marty McFly's DeLorean and time travel back to 1983 and buy one brand new. Not counting the twenty-five years we skipped over to get it here, it's only three days old from the factory. While I was there, I also picked up five cases of Nakamichi brand metal cassettes and a hundred sealed TDK MA-R's"
AK BUYER: "I'll give you a dollar for the whole lot, tapes and all."

You're out of line, I'd slap you if we were talking in person right now.;) Seriously, I don't know anything about that deck, never heard of it. Maybe this would be an appropriate time to send the guy a helpful PM to inform him how easily he could do better.

ME???? accuse an AK'er of being cheap?
Prithee why wouldst thou thinketh that ye olde mate? *stirpot*
Can you imagine the flamefest in the above scenario if the two of them actually started HAGGLING?
Seller: How about a dollar fifty?
AK Buyer: Up yours man, What kind of rip off scam are you trying to run here?
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scurries (or more likely, since again, this is an AK'er, WADDLES) back as fast as he is able to get back to his PC, click into the "Dollars and Scents" forum to prepare his nightly "RIPOFF ALERT".

Since I understand the joke, that means there must be something to it.:)

Omega. Finest quality electronics from Upper Selbovia. Hand made, hand tested, then rolled over by a Russian T-62. And sure does look like it .....

Seriously, that Omega looks like such a cheap deck. He could easily get a better deck on Ebay for less than $50. There's this one seller on Ebay that sells repaired decks for $39 and up. The $39 ones aren't super fancy, usually entry level Realistic, Teac, Sony, etc., from the mid-80's thru mid-90's. However, they've been repaired, tested, & cleaned. Years ago I got a top-loading Realistic deck for about $15 on Ebay & it worked perfectly. Even though it was a top-loading Realistic deck from the 70's, it looked like a Nakamichi compared to that Omega.

That 'Omega' logo looks like a sticker, covering something else. It's obviously quite an old machine--the period when decks with only normal/ferrichrome/chrome settings were made date it to the late 1970s. 1/8" jacks for mikes just screams chintzy and cheap. It looks like it came from whoever made such decks as the SCT-16 for Radio Shack, though a much more bottom-end model.
