If you're in the mood for something different and a little bit arch, look no further than Goldfrapp's debut "Felt Mountain" The music here is mittel European schlocky sinister with heavy Teutonic/Brechtian overtones, not so much Kraftwerk meets Cabaret more oom pah pah oom pah pah meets Portishead; electronic but organically so. Indeed, singer Alison Goldfrapp was involved in Bristol's trip hop scene with Tricky and Massive Attack.

The collection of songs are full of imagery, as if taken from some foreign language film, and the ambiance is one of comfort and alienation. My preferred tracks are "Lovely Head, Human, Pilots, Felt Mountain, and Utopia" Asides from Will Gregory's synthesisers, the spare use of acoustic guitar, orchestral stabs, organ and Alison's whistling and yodeling lend the music an off kilter feel.

In conclusion this is sultry, surreal, ethereal and totally original.

If this grabs you don't expect the follow up "Black Cherry" to replicate their first album in any way. It's completely different, a much harder record with the singer sounding like a techo disco diva in residence at an S&M club............"Supernature" continues in this vein albeit poppier, and their latest, "Seventh Tree" changes tack once more.

Clearly an act on a journey, and that keeps your attention as it's much better to travel than arrive.
