why the "granddaddy of all"? there were many decks made by all manufacturers long before this baby came to be...

It has nothing to due with chronology;this is the biggest, the grandest, the be all & end all, etc., of cassette decks.
Also, I posted a link about this deck last night; my reply was a joke, because I reffered to this deck as the "Granddaddy of all cassette decks."

Man, that is one gorgeous slice of heavy duty machine pie!
Probably the best looking cassette deck I've ever seen. It's almost breathtaking!
Just beautiful! *drool* *drool* Yes! Yes! Yes!

Wow!
I owned one of those about 18 years ago, it was given to me as a scrap machine, all it was a zenar diode in the power supply..........yippe i thought
Build, design all in the top class..........BUT the one i owned had another trick up its sleeve
You would set the azimuth for recording a tape, about half through a C-90 the azimuth would start drifting then towards the end of the tape it start skewing the tape, i spent ages cleaning, checking the transport, but could find nothing wrong, the pinch rollers were excellent, the drive belt to the second capstan was good, i did try new ones but no difference...........it drove me MAD *fit*..........and in the end i gave it up........sold it to a guy who loved its looks, never heard anymore about it
But i think your comment about it being the "Grand Daddy" of cassette decks is correct.........Techincs were at a peak when they built this beauty and the SP10mk11 turntable etc.........trully a golden age for them

Definately the "pinnacle of estoteric cassette deck ownership" there, especially when it took up the space of 2 audio components in your audio rack!! Rob

Hey. I've always felt that what two consenting adults (of any gender) do behind closed doors is their business. As long as it's legal. Just do me a favor. Spare me the lurid details. Unless of course I ask for them. *naughty*

Just thought I would post some info on that great deck. At the moment I have two of these sets at home. Yes - TWO of these. Only one is mine, thought and only one I've fully restored so far - easy to guess who's *wink*.
I'll post some measurement graphs later, however the restored unit works rather well and sounds pretty good too. W&F is 0.05% DIN wtd and frequency response reaches over 20kHz even on Type I tape. I did a few minor mods to its electronics, the most important one was to the output amplifier - just by changing connection of one resistor I've reduced the distortion by 20 times - from 0.2% at Dolby level (in a source monitor mode, obviously) with the output level at max, to about 0.01% at 1kHz (and considerably improved the sound quality - before the mod the sound was considerably worse when the output level control was near maximum, now there is no difference). Interesting that a very similar circuit of the output amp used in some Technics R2R machines, RS1500 series, for instance... .
Cheers

very COOL decks! *bigthumbup*
but i do have a small curiousity about a feature which i seemed to notice only on this one... what do you think about those play-cal trimmers on the front panel?*devil*
are them useful, i.e. to optimize any "mistracking" dolby tapes made on not perfectly aligned decks (levels-wise) or it's better to tune those play-cal trimmers once and not to touch them again? *scratchchin*
of course, the other Rec-cal, bias and EQ trimmers will be calibrated for any tape you will be using... but could those Play-cal trimmers be the source of some confusion on the true PB levels?
really, i was thinking that a PB level control also on the front panel with a sort of bypass switch could be a really useful feature, so you can use the variable PB control only if needed on some tapes or bypassing it when you want the PB level to be the "standard" one.*devil*
anyway, congrats for those nice units! *bigthumbup*
CHEERS,
Vince.

Hey Now,
I just acquired an RS-9900US that is a boat anchor without the cables. Anyone know of a source for them? Can I just hardwire the connections? Thanks any help would be much appreciated.

Two cables are required - one is a simple 6-pin DIN plug to 6-pin DIN plug lead for the PB head (this one is easy to make). The second cable is unobtainable, however it is possible to remove one of the connectors and to build an "umbilical" cable with it, as two connectors there are matching plug and socket on this one. There are 20 pins on these connectors and some of the wires need to be separately screened.
Cheers
Alex
