Hello everyone, name's Kevin (clearly). I'm from New York, and I am astounded that there is such a following for tape decks, tapes, and whatnot. Ever since I was a little kid, I used to love taping things. I would stare at the dB meters on my dad's technics RS-M205 for endless lengths of time. Well, time went on, and as I got older, I still loved magnetic tape. I have no idea what it is, but there is something exciting about buying a new pack of blank tapes (always something I loved doing when younger) and unwrapping them. I have collected a few tape decks over the years, one being the good old RS-M205 (guess where that came from), a Pioneer CT-S99WR, JVC KD-55J, MCS 3564 (same as NEC AUK-5000e I believe), and two crappy double tape decks not worth mentioning.
I too, for some reason, like to "collect" blank tapes. I have no idea why, but the thought of not having any bothers me. TDK SA was always my favorite, Maxell XL-II was good too, as these were both the most obtainable. However, the type II was most impressed with was the fuji Z.
Anyway, I'm currently an electrical engineering student and love listening to music on tapes (especially recorded from vinyl). Look forward to participating in this forum! Glad to see I'm not so "odd" afterall.

Apologies for posting in the wrong section. It wasn't until about 5 minutes after I posted the thread that I went "D'oh! wrong section". I'd also like to mention my RtR collection as well:
Teac A-1200u (original everything except belt)
Teac 4300
I get criticized by people all the time "why do you use tape? Cds are so much better", etc. Personally, there's a certain "smoother" sound that comes out of magnetic tape. I really don't know what it is, but I just always liked tweaking things to get the best recording. Cds are boring, just throw them in and play them. No meters to watch. Also, my ears don't seem to like zeros and ones too much. If I listen to a song on mp3, I get "sick of hearing it" much quicker than listening to it on tape. I'm in the process of hopefully acquiring a nice 3 head tape deck from ebay in the near future (my first 3 head cassette deck). I recently borrowed a bunch of tapes from Aunt from 1980-1985 of New Wave music, and I'd like to copy them. I could just copy them onto my PC and convert them to mp3, but what fun is that??
Maybe I'll post some pictures of my tape decks for you guys a little later on.

Welcome, Kevin. You're right, tapes often sound much smoother than digitized sources -- the reason, of course, is in the waveform.

Hi Kevin,
A big hearty welcome to TH! How'd you come about finding this site? Any other ol' gear you running your source material through?
Take care,
Nando.
