Some cool stuff there! *thumbsup* What are you ending up using the most as your main source? I got R2R stuff first but then ended up addicted to cassettes... and now use them 90%+ of the time for listening... just wonderin'. So did you get a camera?

westgate

yes! i got a camera. a wallyworld special but it seems pretty good.
like i'd know the difference betwixt it and a good camera.

i listen to more lps and cassettes (only own about 30 cds) than r2r. easier handling. less work.
but i do love the sound from the r2rs. so i keep them around plus i think they look classey.
but waddooiknow?*bananadance*

Great to hear you got a camera! Those Kodak Easyshare C140's aren't any bad at all. Four or so years ago you would have probably had to spend $300+ for a camera with those specs. Where now those specs are taken for granted in a $90 camera.

Yep about the easier handling on the cassettes for me also. I also didn't realize I'd get the sound quality I do out of them! *reelspin* *reelspin*

moved a few extry components around and ended up with a small 'workbench' system.
the gx230d, my original pio qa800a quad amp i bought in tokyo in '73, and a pair of nak s1-b speakers (the little black hard-to-see boxes on both ends.
this setup is across the room from the main a/v system.

Hi westgate,

Thanks for sharing the recent pictures of your great looking gear. The three on three is an awesome display. Do you also have quite a few pre-recorded 7" tape reels?

Nando.

thank you!
maybe 45-50 prerecorded tapes. quite a few bought back in the day ('73/'74) and the rest in the last 7 months or so. off 'bay.
i've only listened to maybe ~30 of them. saving the rest for a 'rainy day'.

Hi westgate,

That's plenty of reels. Were there any particular labels, which stand out amongst the rest, for ultimate fidelity in pre-recorded tapes? What music interests you? You have quad recordings, as well? I haven't had too much success in finding any good rock music in reel, or 8-track.

so far, the most difference in fidelity that i've noticed has been 7.5 ips vs 3 3/4 ips. haven't yet really noticed any fidelity difference re labels-but i'm sure there are some.
i should add that i've reached the point where i 'try' to listen to the music and not the hardware/medium. (HAH!)

i prefer classic rock but also really like classical, jazz, and am learning to appreciate opera, show/stage tunes. and a few other genres i can't think of right now. (edit-gregorian chants, anyone?)

10 quad tapes (included in the 45 to 50 #), 3 of which i made myself back in '73 from cd-4 lps, sq lps, etc.
i had bought 4 back then and the other 3 i recently won in a 'bay auction r2r tape 'lot' of 18.
the lack of and difficulty in aquiring quad tapes is a bit of a 'sore spot' .

Hi westgate,

Any luck in pre-recorded titles in 10.5"? I started collecting a few older jazz tunes... one of my favorites artists being Stan Getz. Blame my father-in-law for that, as he's a tenor saxophonist, and played in a quartet in his home town of Prince Rupert. The only sax I'd been used to before that, was in Supertramp.
Don't have a quad R2R, yet. Do have a Sansui QR-4500 receiver, and an Empire quad cartridge with a new stylus to be mounted. Look forward to the quad experience, soon.

Take care,

Nando.

i've never really looked for 10" prerecorded tapes. and haven't noticed any on the 'bay.
the tape project (http://www.tapeproject.com/) is the only place i can think of right now that makes and sells them. extremely pricey.
i'm into *reelspin**reelspin* but not to that extent.

quad's nice but i'm just as happy with 2 ch. audio.

if i want to listen to multi channel music bad enough (without firing up one of the 'quaddies'), i just put on a concert dvd and listen to the 5.1 downmixed to the 4.0 my system handles.
that's pretty awesome! ie pink floyds 'pulse'!! etc.

Hi westgate,

I suspect, with all the neat photos posted this past week, your 3 on 3, and Jay Tee's revolving Nakamichi RX-505 cassette tray, will be top contenders for "Image of The Week". Am I right Des-Lab?

just tried to take apart my LXI 'boombox' ($2 in thrift store ~5 years ago) in order to give it a good cleaning but couldn't find any accessible screws.

so i shot deoxit into all the switches and tape transport areas that i could reach from its exterior.
gave the heads/capstan all a good scrubbing with 91% iso. alc.
also lightly scuffed up pinch roller with fine grit sandpaper.

now switches all work better, ff/rw are much faster and now you can play a tape on the d**m thing and it (almost) sounds fairly good.

as it has an aux line input, this 'b'box is used for audio for my audiovox portable dvd player (with aux video input that i watch tv on-10" screen).
this little a/v setup also used for monitoring dvd recorders when i burn a dvd-r on either the tosh dr-2 or panny s15.

you'll notice jaetees UDAR pics on monitor in pic at right.
