Hear are some pics of my available blank cassettes right now, minus the box of 50 Fuji DR-II's from Total Media. Yep, going to buy more this weekend. Not because I want to, but because if the variety of blank cassettes dwindles in the next 10 years like it has the last 10 years, I have no choice but to stock up now.

So seriously. How ARE those Akai tapes? Are they attractive because of their name and low cost? Or are they really a sort of 'sleeper' tape?
Seeing these posts of them over and over is making it awfully tempting for me to get a few boxes of them just to see what all the fuss is about.
Problem is I would have nowhere to store them, being already stuffed to the hilt with (mosty) Maxell and Denon NOS from the 80's and early 90's.

In all seriousness, I really like them, both the GX type II & the SX type I. I have gotten very good results from both of them on my NAD 613. They sound great & I'm going to buy more of them.
Think of it this way; for $35 including shipping (they have a flat $10 S&H fee for orders of $25 or less), you can get 2 boxes of the Akai GX-90($8 each = $16) & 2 boxes of the Akai SX-90 ($4.50 each = $9) from Batteries & Butter. That's a small price to pay for such good tapes, IMHO. That averages out to less than $9/box w/shipping included!
So I guess to answer your question, I'd say a sleeper tape; a tape that slips under the radar. The low cost is just an added bonus. Until a few months ago, I didn't even know Akai made cassettes.

You could store some of them Maxell's and Denon's at my house. :D

Believe me, had I known 15 years ago that decent cassette tapes would be so hard to come by today, I would have stockpiles of Maxell XLII-S, Sony HF-S, & Sony UX-Pro. Who knew? Who would have ever thought that something like blank tapes, all my favorites that I took for granted back in the early 90's, would be non-existant today? Also, who would have thought that metal cassettes would be fetching a king's ransom on Ebay? I wish I would have spent a few hundred dollars on metal cassettes back around 1993. I'd be a rich man today!

In 25 years you will have given them all away in name that tune contests. You will have awarded the person making the 1 millionth post on TH's a box or two of them. :D

Well if I were to do that, you'd better WIN them contests. That means you better quickly learn everything I have in my library! ;)
But I don't think I'll host THAT many contests. I gotta keep a few for myself.
But I do like your new avatar. :-?

I think I should try out my new avatar over at AK and see how long it takes for them to delete it. :D
I was just kidding about the tapes. Definitely keep some for yourself.
