So I reported in my "plastic repair" post thread (http://www.tapeheads.net/showpost.php?p=44361&postcount=15) about several parts that have dropped out of the cassette mechanism. I finally obtained the SM in PDF form and cropped this exploded parts view (attached) out of this document. The two parts in question are the 3-564-128-11 spring plate and it's attendant 2.5mm steel ball. The only question is do these go behind the REC/PB head assy against the head bracket? There isn't a line-up line for the spring plate like there is for the steel ball and most others.

Anyone have experience with one of these types of mechanisms? What does it rest on or remain captive by at the top and bottom?

The idea is that the ball bearing is a precision surface for the head block to move on, keeping head alignment stable. Typical mechanisms use 2 balls, I dunno what happened to yours *devil*
Anyway, the steel ball goes into the nylon hole in the head block, while the spring covers it, keeping the ball in the hole and pulling the head block away from the metal beneath it. To can use a tiny dab of grease to keep the ball in the hole while fastening the spring, otherwise the reassembly is impossible. If you drop the ball.....*eyepop*

sweep the area with a magnet.

Thanks, I highlighted all the 2.5mm steel balls shown, but since the spring plate fell out (when that plastic piece broke off) I assume the single ball I have is used in conjunction with that one. My only other question is what does the top or bottom of the spring plate bear against for support, or are they non-captive ends? The exploded parts view shows the ball (bearing) going into a recess in the head bracket, but doesn't show where the ends of the spring plate fasten/notched(?).
