i've read in several places that the two machines are basically the same with the mr-1 having xlr and 1/4" outs as opposed to the 300s rca outs and a few other minor differences.
but it seems to me that bx-300s fetch higher ebay prices than mr-1s. apparently most folks prefer them over the mr-1s.
anyone know why? *scratchchin*

Here I am thinking of two reasons - the MR-1 is professional deck and when such is sold usually it is pretty much close to the end of its resource life. The heads are worn out and the Nak heads are not known for their longevity, etc..
The second reason I could think of is the lack of bias knob .

Exactly as Dimitar says, being sold as professional units usually means worked to death to most folks.

Yea, I would think this is a pretty big reason too. Plus, most MR-1's I've seen look pretty beat up compared to the BX-300's available. Like they've been moved from one rack to the next. Seldom do I see one in pristine condition, but to be fair I have not shopped for an MR-1 in quite some time...
For me, the primary negative is the lack of a bias knob as mentioned above. To me, that somewhat mitigates the benefit of being able to monitor the playback head separately from the source. Fine-tuning the bias can make a big difference. Even my 2-head RX-303 has bias adjust. Kinda strange they left it off the MR-1.

they sound like pretty good reasons.

what i like about pro gear is they're usually built like tanks and therefore may be worth repairing.
thanks.

O, yes, definitely. BX-300 is an example of excellent engineering coming from Nakamichi. Excellent sonical quality - how many decks in the world can boast 20Hz-20KHz freq response +/- 3dB at Dolby level for all three tape types? I would say very few.. Very quiet deck - SNR above 75 dB with Dolby C , for metal tape - 80 dB. And this is without HX Pro. And yet very simple and well organized deck - replacing anything on this deck is a piece of cake - belts , idler tire compared to other top quality decks. Very reliable too - the Sankyo transport is one of the best transports ever designed and that's why so many companies like Nakamichi, Onkyo, Harman Kardon have reused it in their designs. No wonder Nakamichi BX300 was selected it as a professional deck.
And for us one of the nicest things about this deck is that it is one of the cheapest three-header Naks on Ebay mostly because it was produced in large numbers.
