View Full Version : Strange Otari Behaviour

My Otari was showing some strange behaviour last night. I set out to play a 7 in. 7 1/2 IPS precorded reel, had the speed set, and reel-size button set.
I pushed play...the speed starting creeping along, very slow, obviously not at 7 1/2 IPS...then it started to speed up...obviously in excess of 7 1/2.

So I rewound and tried it again; speed at play was way too fast!
So then I powered the deck off and then turned it back on again and then it played OK.

I find this odd. You would think if the electronics that control the playback motor weren't functioning properly...that they would do so consistently.

Anybody ever have this happen to them?

Grant that maybe a sign that something is going bad on you, maybe the brakes or the electronics that controls the speed. Or worst yet maybe the motor.

Grant,

It sounds like you may have the same frequent problem as in this thread.
http://www.tapeheads.net/showthread.php?t=2705

Try pushing the speed switch in and out to see what it does. There should not be any lag when switching, it should switch from high to low right away if the switch is functioning properly.

If you are good w/ soldering iron swap the power switch and the speed switch. Should cure the issue if all else fails. Read the mentioned thread, especially 'bout pulling the buttons off the switches.

Also, pull the back cover off and do deoxit on the hi-lo speed range switch.

I see now by looking at you sig that you have a BIII, Doug and I are referancing the BII. The BII and BIII have differrant switches in that location and what we recommended may not help you , sorry.

OOps just notices that as well.

Sorry to be a buzz-kill :(

Thanks to both anyhow; I'm going to spin some tapes tonight and see if the problem re-appears. As someone who owns a 37-year old motorcycle, I know all about the pain of intermitent electrical problems....been stuck on the side of the road with a few of these....
