My Denon tapes have a tendency to do this. maxells not as bad. The tape is not layered evenly in the shell. I FF and RR 5-6 times and it got better. Tape deck has hard time playing it near the end at proper speed. Lets heasr from you. Mike

Is the belt in the deck ok? When they were getting loose I find the belt slips sometimes.

I would suspect the drive belt or belts too with this type of behavior.

Same thoughts here... aging, stretched or slipping belts or in some machines it could be a idler tire. What deck do you have?

I'd suggest idler tire if it's idler drive. Had the exact same thing happen on an HK deck. Easy to fix, but annoying to troubleshoot.

I have a tandberg 3014A. Last time it was in shop (year ago) Tech said belt was way to tight. Since then it has been getting slower to FF. Before that the machine would fly through a tape ------------. I wonder if it affects plyback speed too?

I always used to run the tape thru and then rewind I was told by the tape hotshots of the day that it took the tension off the mechanism and would give you a better recording fact or myth I couldn,t say,my Onkyo re-winds fine my old Nak needed a belt

I have a Denon DR-M33HX that does something similar, when i play or record a tape on this deck the tape sounds warbly especially in the vocals when the tape gets near the end of a side,(About 15 minutes left).Up to that point everything sounds perfect. Was kinda wondering what could be causeing this? The deck is a belt driven 3 Head dual capstan 3 Motor deck, the pinch rollers look brand new.Bought this deck off ebay and of course was advertised as like new working condition.Deck is in mint cosmetic condition and it even has the nice rosewood side panels that are perfect..

Did your tech replace the belt? Was it tight because it was replaced with the wrong belt before? When you change one belt change all of them that come with the kit. Your playback speed can be effected by old belts, though have you cleaned your pinch roller lately? Lot's of variables. BTW I haven't heard that Tanberg but I've always read that it is one of the finest decks ever made.
