Has anyone used the Agfa ME IV Pure Metal HDX?
I'd been tracking 3 sealed examples on Ebay Germany and had bid what I believed to be enough to win them. Alas, I was outbid to the tune of 67 Euros, about $106!
This perplexes me; are these tapes really that good, does it come down to collectability or rarity and if so what makes them so good.
Truthfully, I can't recall seeing these anywhere, Agfa being known more for photographic goods than anything else. Maybe they went head to head with BASF in Germany as TDK/Maxell did.
Intriguingly, they were also responsible for a type III tape - comments from forum members based in Germany are welcome.
Some other images on the ProjectC-90 website.

Way back when I used to find Agfa's at some stores over here, but they weren't common. I have three Agfa cassettes that I never recorded on just because I didn't want to use them. They don't appear very often over here on eBay.

Man, what I wouldn't give for a bunch of cases of that stuff. I loved FeCr while it was available. One of the least understood nuances of tape history ....

Sorry.
By accident, it happened that I said something completely nonsense.
I can't find the option to delete the post?

You can use the edit button on your own posts and just go back and delete the erroneous info. It'll still be there if someone after you quoted it, but we'll all have a good chuckle. Besdies, we all make complete habits out of saying non-sensical stuff.

Was Agfa an off-shoot/subsidiary of some other, larger company, like BASF, or was it it's own company?

AGFA was (and I believe still is) an old German company on its own, probably most famous of the Agfacolor films, being in the top 3 with Kodak and Fuji. First the gave up on tapes later they stopped producing consumer films as well.

Agfa-Gevaert, huge multi-national company, specialists in photography and god knows what.
They probably had a worldwide presence as I have received emails from all comers in all corners of the globe, so their tapes at least were recognised and well regarded.

Do you mean the Agfa Pure Metal HDX? Then the prices have fallen to 10-20 Euros a piece. About a year or two ago, one seller suddenly sold out his stock of about 30 cassettes in total, since then most collectors have their examples and are satisfied so far.
These metal tapes were no original Agfa, they are technically the same as early-mid 80's Philips and PDMagnetics metals. The ferrichrome Carat HDX, in contrast, are genuine Agfa.
Agfa was independent until their magnetic tape division was acquired by BASF in 1992.

Agfa made a superb duplicating tape which was Type 1 and had superb output. I wish that formulation was still around, it met or even beat some Type II tapes for output level head on. I had a relative who did tape duplication and sold tape in bulk. He gave me several cassettes and his 800 number if I wanted more. I used many of them.
