As stuwee noticed earlier today and as my updated signature states Larrys got a new toy! A Sony TC-K890ES that I purchased from fellow Tapehead BlaseES.
If you can remember the feeling of opening the box containing a brand new cassette deck you know how I felt this morning after the UPS truck left. Brand new is the only way to describe the condition of the K890ES, perfect in appearance, perfect in operation. Just as BlaseES said it was.
This deck more than met my expectations, it's flawless, and I don't have to send it off to fix anything!!!
I'll post some recording and playback results in a latter thread, right now I'm enjoying listening to previous recorded tapes and putting the deck through its paces. *bananadance**jammin**bananadance**bananadance*

Nice deck. The 890 was the predecessor to the 909ES and the 909 was based off the 890. It should give good performance.

Nice deck Naknut. I've been keeping an eye out for a Sony ES. I've never heard one but always hear great things about them. The last of the big timers. Good Score!

Actually, the TC-K909ES is a direct descendant of the 950ES/970ES centered transport designs, and stretching back to the glory days of the highly acclaimed 730ES & 700ES units.
The 890ES has it's roots from the prior 870ES, but more importantly the left sided transport designs of the 777ES era.
The centered transport platforms were a bit more stout on the bracing, attention to mass dampening and electronic/electrical isolation areas of the design but the 777ES and follow-ons were pretty damn close in performance and not as hard on the pocket book. These parallel design lines shared the base TD200 transport engine which is built like a frickin tank and is one of the major factors contributing to the longevity of these decks.
The 909ES platform eventually evolved into what was the final TC-KA series; KA3, KA6 & KA7 - high end models (depending on region) - with all but the KA7 seeing significant cost reductions throughout the entire design.

You know looking at it for awhile IMHO, it looks dead sexy with the black side panels as opposed to the rosewood. What do you think?
