Joel I read all of the post, my friend as the saying goes (You Can Lead A Horse To Water, But You Can't Make Him Drink It); some people just don't get it. Also remember that we all hear a little different. LOL!!!!!

Hey Joel,
Great stuff!
This guy's issue was the cost of R2R maintenance versus vinyl. Like you told him, that's fine. But right away he has to try to invalidate as obsolete, R2R's generally, to make his nonexistent point. I don't know what it is with musicians, audiophiles and the like (not all, of course), on these sites (not this one), but far too many are narrow minded, bigoted, totalitarian little pricks. I notice a lot of them think they're saving the world but have actually become the pitchfork & torch wielding Frankenstein villagers they rail against. They also like piling on, as Lady Ayeka's post about AK attests to.
I think some of them are defending whatever they sunk their money into now that they're stuck with it.
And speaking of costs. Haven't looked lately, but a few years ago didn't I see, as an example, a Clearaudio Master Reference turntable for like $12,000? Or Rockport speakers, I believe Kharma Ceramics, or Exquisites for around 100K? If I'm wrong, I'll come back & remove this. Could've seen the Beatles, or Miles Davis live in the 60's for under $5.00!! For the prices I've seen top-or-supposed-top-of-the-line vinyl gear go for, you can have a Studer A827, if you can find one, & everything to go with it & still have plenty left over.
Either way, it's never 'to each his own' with these guys. It's always 'my way to each' & I have to 'win' & say 'gotcha' like a 12 year old brat with a chip on their shoulder, not to insult 12 year old brats.
Joel, you knocked his chip off. Now, that's fun with audio! *reelspin**reelspin**reelspin*

Hi Manalog,
Thanks for the excellent post.
I think some of them are defending whatever they sunk their money into now that they're stuck with it.
Man, you said it!! Could not agree more and if you were next to me right now I'd give you a big manalog hug! :-)<-
Yes!! That's exactly as I read his posts. He's probably bitter that he sold off his old R2R stuff so he needs to justify this in his mind by bad-mouthing the R2R format to everyone.
As for costs, I guess to each his own, but my problem with his post is why state that "it's so expensive" when (like you say) there are people out there with 100k tables, 9k cartridges, 20k phono stages, etc. I mean, you could deck yourself out in reel to reel for decades with that type of loot!!!
I had a friend over today who owns 185k Genesis loudspeakers, but do you know the difference with this person? He doesn't badmouth or make judgements or assumptions or broad sweeping generalizations on gear or other formats with which he is unfamiliar. His philosophy is "the proof is in the listening!". If it sounds good, it is good---no matter the cost/price. Now that's my kind of audio-buddy!
I think the poster Elison came around a bit today with his last post to me. At least I made some ground.

Great read. Interesting to hear everyones philosophies, compromises and thoughts about what they perceive great audio to be. My personal take about what I listen too is that my R2R 'copies' of whatever are not vinyl or CD quality on my system but exceed those sources on 90+% of other rigs I have listened to in my life. And a statement I have always added when talking audio to others is... it's not the gear, it's the music that you listen to.
