Received the Teac today and I must say the experience exceeded my expectations. It was only described as in "working condition" and with 7-8 small eBay typical not the best photo's. But what was delivered was like a trip into a time machine back to 1975. The deck was double boxed in the original double boxes, which was not in the description:

There was an original shipping label from July 1975 on the outer box:

The condition of the dust cover is in 'like new' condition:

This is a used deck but not much. I got one 10 1/2" tape and three 7" tapes, all Maxell... all used... but I bet these were the only tapes that were ever used on this machine. The heads are easily in 95% plus condition. It must have sat unused out for a loooong time. It wasn't dusted or cleaned before it was boxed and you can tell the position that all the knobs were in because of the dust. The first thing I did before firing her up was lube the three motors, rubber pinch roller and capstan shaft. Then demaged and cleaned the heads...which were NOT dirty at all. Soooooo. Here she is:

And the important part is she is working and sounding great!!*reelspin**reelspin* And BTW.... my final bid won by 15¢!!

Thank you! Shipping was a major concern also but I was assured it was going to be packed well. It came to Kansas via Virginia.

I made a tape off of NPR of two hours of Jazz With Bob Parlocha (this is what I use all my decks for mainly). Sounds wonderful.

And BTW while I lubed the motors I did put in a new belt. Also when I say I cleaned the heads I mean I cleaned the entire tape pathYes!.

Nice*drool* Decks in that condition are hard to find.
How do you like the 499 tape? It's on sale now and I was considering them for my Tandberg.

Thanks*wave*... I've been able to find decks in Ex cosmetic condition but end up being dissapointing in operation. Mainly they are just used up... head wear, worn brakes... etc. Though I do plan to use this one up myself!:D

I saw you ask elsewhere about the 499 and I wanted to hear others assessments of it also. I did get the $29.99 closeout for the 2500ft, that is still going on at Musicians Friend, got 5, so I got free shipping. I mainly tape from my Yamaha CT-800 tuner (a well above average tuner IMHO).... so I have no complaints about the tape. I haven't taped CD's or vinyl to it so I don't know it's limitations. I keep the levels to around +3db max for good saturation, analog VU meters are different beasts than the LCD versions. It's takes a little practice to learn each decks meters let alone how that translates to each tape formulation. And just to say I am picky when it comes to good sound (or should I say, what I perceive to be good sound).

I actually ordered 4 of the same from Musician's Freind before I received my R to R and they were delivered yesterday. I am recording all of my Led Zep's now. Just listening to the tape monitor while transferring, I'm very impressed. After I'm done I'll do some critical listening. You can't go wrong with the $29.99 price tag which includes metal flanges.

Yep. Good to hear you like them so far. I just finished listening to the tape I made last night. Sounded good all the way through with no dropouts or flaws. I *might* go to the well for more before they are all gone. Did you see this auction*eyepop*: http://cgi.ebay.com/4-Quantegy-499-Gold-Reel-To-Reel-1-4-Inch-Tapes-NEW_W0QQitemZ150264767911QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item1 50264767911&_trksid=p3286.m14.l1318
Though a few years from now it probably will be a bargain:eek:.

Hey Acoustic,

That's great. Very lucky it arrived OK. I've lost a few in transit (see Shipping Horrors thread).

I'm not surprised it's working right out of the box. If it wasn't particularly badly treated, these Teacs are usually pretty solid machines. And of course they look great.

I know that feeling when a machine arrives. Open it up, plug it in, turn it on & the meters light up. Exciting, but you cant be sure yet. Maybe it's been damaged in shipping, or the seller lied & it's a total disaster or worse than they said. Cause you just don't know until you start running it. Nothing beats that feeling of realizing you got a good one.

Sounds like the heads are in spectacular shape on that one. You even got the dustcover. Those are pretty rare. Great find! Beautiful machine!! *reelspin**reelspin**reelspin*

beautiful deck! And Teac still has the belt, pinch roller and other parts. Even if lightly used, the rubber parts could fail after 30 years.

I've already replaced the main belt, it worked but had a few cracks in it. The pinch roller still has some softness to it... and cleaned up fine. Hey.. and welcome to TH... as you see I'm in the KC area also.

Wow with a Dust cover to,,thats a super looking deck*reelspin**reelspin**reelspin* Yep.. and the dust cover is in perfect condition...no cracks or chips. Interestingly... on the 3300SR it fit's but you can't even have 7" reels on the deck with it on. It just didn't look right....

So I am using it on my 2300S where it fit's with the 7" reels on and during usage.:-)<-

Thanks. I've seen a lot of old ads posted for these Teacs but don't remember seeing the dust cover in the ads. I just have heard that most that are around have cracks or they're glued. I feel very fortunate in obtaining this one! Yes! As you can see this one is truly **mint**.
