Until recently, and foremost my tenure here, I never heard of Otari, not alone that they made tapes.

Well Otari actually makes a lot of things. Though in our circle, they are best known for their MX-5050 series of pro half track reel to reel decks, which last time I checked, were still available new if you had an extra 5 grand or so laying around. They can be frequently be found for about one tenth that amount on Ebay (sometimes one twentieth if you are persistent and lucky). But the used ones have a tendancy to come from studios and/or radio or TV stations and have usually been ran into the ground and need lots and lots of TLC to be enjoyed as audiophile toys.

Anyway. Otari never made or marketed any actual tape. At least none that I'm aware of. But inasumuch as they sold the decks, they HAD to be provided with a takeup reel. And of course through the mists of time, nothing was there to prevent anyone from loading some other tape on it and storing it in the Otari box. Most likely that's what you are looking at.

I guess that sort of slipped my mind, but makes sense, empty take up reel. Sort of like Akai take up reels with the decks. Thanks Des.

Otari still has take-up reels for 1/4 tape available as a part. I think they are like $50 each.
