I went to Radio Shack today & aside from being saddened as to what it is now compared to 15-20 years ago, I looked at their selection of cassettes. All they had were type I tapes. They have the LN series (low noise) & the XR series (extended range). They wanted $2.99 for a 2-pack of the LN-90 & $5.99 for a 3-pack of the XR-90. Yeah, $5.99 for 3 Radio Shack cassettes. Not going to happen, not when the Akai SX & Fuji DR-I are available for less than $5.99/10 ct. box.

That price may not be cheap, but in todays world its better then no tape at all. The XR tapes are actually not too bad.

I wouldn't bother just because there are so many better options out there. But I still find Radioshack useful for buying electronics parts (capacitors, resistors etc), bread boards, and small PCB to play around with. Other than that everything seems to revolve around cell phones.

If you want to try newer Rad Shack cassettes keep an eye on ebay or amazon and you can usually find them very inexpensively. I bought some about a year ago on amazon 3 for a $1 and shipping was very cheap also. I bought some a while back on ebay and they were about .50 each including shipping. I bought both Type I and Type II Tapes. I have enough to last a lifetime. :)

Radio Shack did have some very good type II cassettes about 8-9 years ago, the SHD (super high definition). Looked like the Maxell XLII-S or TDK SA-X. It was their TOTL high bias tape & was pretty good. When I got back into cassettes this spring, I thought Radio Shack still made them. Boy, was I disappointed that they were no longer made; I was sure RS would come thru on that one.

Those SHD cassettes RS had were very good. Once again, had I known Radio Shack would quit making them, I'd bought out the store. How do those HC cassettes sound?

I have only recorded one of the HC tapes and have never got around to listening to it all the way through. From what I have heard so far it sounded good. The reels and mechanisms seem to turn smoothly and shell is till held together with 5 screws. It is in a good quality case. However they not individually wrapped but rather wrapped in three packs, so once you open a three pack you have three tapes opened.

Man, I saw the heading and thought there was going to be good news about Radio Shack. I should have known better. Don't even get me started on the extremely crappy Optimus brand am/fm/tv band radios. I had 2 of them crap out on me in about 4 months time. And they weren't cheap either (39 bucks a pop!!!). I had to get the district manager involved just to get a refund.

Our Radio Shack remains useful for the same reasons, but as another sad commentary on life these days, only if you're already smarter than the "salesperson" who's trying to help you. Most likely the kid behind the counter sold you your shoes at Footlocker last week, and will be working at McChickenExpress next week. This week he's your "expert assistance" yet can't even tell you that they carry capacitors, let alone what one is and where to find them. I spent a few trying minutes with one of their salespeople a few weeks ago just trying to cross an UPS battery for a device I was repowering because he wouldn't show me the amp-hour rating for the battery they stocked. If you know exactly what you want, walk in, grab it, pay and leave...... then they're just fine.

Yeah I've gone in there a few times and bought large amounts of all kinds of electronics parts, and I just park myself in front of the drawers, tell them I need no help, get everything I want, and go. I don't expect any of them to know anything about electronics at this point.
