....yep....that's right....I am not going to be around here for at least a week.
Starting Sunday (06 July 2008) at about 9am, i will be gone from TH for at least a week, and then only sporadically logged in after that.
I am going to an away camp called Camp Jump Start, so I can lose some weight. It's definitely needed. Yes!
I am not allowed to go use their computers for anything but email, but my phone has full internet, and I will be posting from that when I can, but I also need to talk to people.
To wish me well, or contact me, my email is:
reemeberthefuture at gmail dot com. I can check that after the first week. We are allowed NO CONTACT with the outside for a week.
I am of COURSE bringin gear:
Peavey CS-400
Tascam M-30
Pioneer QL-600A
Ipod
Sony MDR-V6 'phones
REalistic Minimus-12
Griffin iFM to listen to the radio
Peavey and Tascam are to DJ with. Yes, I have been given permission to bring this stuff.
That is all.

Wow. Almost sounds more like a boot camp than a summer camp. Was this trip by your own choice, if you don't mind my asking?
I know what you mean with the whole weight thing. Lord knows almost all of us can stand to lose a few. I'll definitely have lost a few by the time Sunday rolls around. Helping to watch ten kids in summertime definitely gives a workout.
And when not doing that, I ride the bicycle about an hour a day a few days a week. And oh yeah. I try and watch what I eat. If I eat a bacon cheeseburger for lunch, you can bet I'll be eating Cheerios for dinner.
Well we wish you a safe and fun excursion. Watch the gear. And be sure to give us a full trip report upon your return.

I definitely will.
I'm about 310 pounds, so yeah, it was my choice if I went. Or not. I chose to go.
It's not like a boot camp, we just exercise...a LOT.......but we do have 2-3 hours of free tim every night when no one is in the cabin, and I can hook up the stereo and crank some tunes!
I am transfering stuff of vinyl now, but once James Taylor is finished, I am convertin' Beethoven's 9 symphonies from the 7.5IPS Deautche Grammaphon R2R tapes.
Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. :-)<-!jam! Supposedly one of the best performances of these works.

We wish you the best of luck with that.
Now let me speak to you as a friend. I'm sure you know that 310 isn't a good weight to be at. Not unless you are a professional body builder. Or else nine feet tall. Especially at just 16 years of age. I am 34 and measure in at about 220, with [a] few pound variations here and there depending on how much I exercise and what I eat during a given week. But I'm also 6'3" tall. Of course I am far from perfect. Even going back to when I was a varsity swimmer for two years in high school, I never really did lose the 'baby' gut. So I still have a bit of it today. My all time peak was at 242 when I was 23. And I had horrible dietery habits at the time.
Now let me give you a few tips and pointers. First, and this cannot be overemphasized enough: DO NOT EXPECT IMMEDIATE RESULTS.
Losing weight THE RIGHT WAY takes lots of time and lots of discipline. No matter how energized or galvanized you think you are, the absolute worst thing you can possibly do is literally, overnight, do a complete 180º on all of your habits. Changes need to be phased in gradually over time. To do otherwise will be too much of a shock to both the mind and body. If you eat a lot of junk and/or high caloric foods, an immediate switch to a 'rabbit' diet will NEVER work. Do not starve yourself or try to get absurdly drastic. You will go nuts and in no time at all, you will drive yourself crazy and go back to your old ways with a vengeance. Any weight you lose in that short time will come back with lots and lots of interest. That will sink you into an ever bigger despair and round and round you go, accomplishing nothing but a yo-yo diet and a battered self esteem.
The key to anything ultimately lies in balance and moderation. That's it. There is no 'magic' formula or pill. Surgery is expensive and carries high risks. Plus, because there was no disclipline involved, there is no appreciation. Many people who have cosmetic or surgical weight loss procedures done almost always gain their weight back within a few years. Again, bringing them right back to square one.
The only proven and effective way to lose weight (no matter what the barrage of Jenny Craig or Allie commercials tell you) is quite simple: burn more calories than you take in.
That simply means you can eat pretty much whatever you want whenever you want. As long as the number of calories burned exceeds what goes in. You can THINK you are doing 'good' by eating nothing but rice cakes, lettuce, and cottage cheese three times a day. But again. That drastic of a change is always short lived. You would be better off eating...say...ONE "treat" meal (a pizza, a steak, a burger, or whatever you like) once a day and balancing it out with low calorie meals the rest of the day. Like I said above: I'm not afraid to let a double bacon cheesburger cross my lips every so often. The key is doing it ONCE IN AWHILE. Not every day and definitely not three times a day. If you eat a two thousand calorie dinner, you better be eating (as I mentioned) Cheerios or something else really light the rest of the time. Also: portion control. Eat until you are no longer hungry. Don't eat and eat and eat until you collapse in your chair. If you are served more than you can reasonably handle; it's called a doggie bag or leftovers for tomorrows dinner. A good rule of thumb to go by is to eat no more, in a single sitting, more food than can fit into the palm of your hand with little or no overflow. But again, adjust and tweak so that the net result is fewer calories going in per day than what gets burned off through metabolism and heightened activity.
You will find doing this to be much more effective, tolerable, and managable in the long run than any 'magic' diet or 'cold turkey' paradigm will ever do.
And in between that, it is best to eat several times a day. Eat your normal three squares. But indulge in a few light snacks in between to help keep you from getting hungry. Every two weeks, I go down to my local Trader Joes and mix myself a trail mix consisting of almonds, cashews, raw sunflower seeds, raw pepitas, dark semi-sweet chocolate chips, and raisins. It's healthy, delicious, and keeps me from overindulging at lunch or dinnertime.
The other half of this equation is, of course, exercise. There are two types of exercise: aerobic and ANaerobic. The latter includes things like weight lifting, situps/pushups, and the like. Those are great for the muscles and tone, but don't really burn calories. Some people who focus on just that can actually be in worse health than some people who are active but may still have a soft middle.
The former is what you REALLY want to focus on. That's what gets the heart and breathing rate up. That's what burns calories and really gets you in good shape. Those activities include running/jogging, bicycling, swimming, tennis, and sex.
Yes. The last item on that list actually has proven health benefits besides carnal and reproductive satisfaction. It gets the heart and breathing rate up and burns a lot of calories.
My experience has been that going to the gym is an exceedingly boring (and needlessly expensive) endeavor. It's like being in a giant locker room doing the same repetitive actions over and over while not accomplishing anything. I'm not saying that gyms can't be productive, because in certain circumstances, they can be great. I'm just saying that for *ME*, I'd rather ride my bicycle to and from work as opposed to riding a stationary one that goes nowhere. When I ride to and from work, I not only get the same exercise, but I'm also doing something USEFUL at the same time: commuting and saving on gas money. And the scenery is fluid rather than static.
And finally, going along with the final scenario. You'd be amazed at how many calories you can burn by just taking a few extra steps each day: vacuum. Go for a walk. Take the stairs at work (if feasible). And so on. A lot of little things like that might seem insignificant by themselves, but collectively, it can really add up to a lot of extra calories burned.
To see what I'm talking about, if you ever go to a public gym, sit in the parking lot and watch how many cars will drive around the parking lot in circles, over and over. These are people who are ostensibly coming to lift weights, play raquetball, swim laps, etc. Yet they just cannot bring themselves to park their car a few rows away and walk an extra two minutes to and from the car?
Try that. Next time you go somewhere, park in a distant spot way off in the corner. Not only will you get some extra exercise, but also won't have to deal with parking lot 'road rage'. And you certainly won't have to worry about getting a door ding.
Because no one else will be parked there.
Good luck. And please keep us all posted.

*Hi5* *devil* *check* )dance( :-)<- :-oo :-oo Big-> *stirpot* *idea*
I'm 16. *devil*
And in regards to the rest of your post:
I definitely love to ride my bike, but am so lazy that I never do......I have found that although I was supposed to ride 5 miles a day, the bus driver would pick me up and drop me off a block away from my apartment. So almost no riding got done.
I will definitely try my absolute hardest, and NOT GET SICK this time....last time I got really really really really sick at the end, and the girlfriend that I had there broke up with me, so things were bad. And I went home and was disillusioned.
So the weight went back on.
I don't expect immediate results, and I won't get them.
My dietary habits are not that bad, but my exercise is...I sometimes don't walk 1000 steps in a day...that's my killer.
I do occasionally use the treadmill I have, though.

David,
I hope you come out of camp with a huge smile on your face from what you have accomplished. I can understand how it feels being overweight. I'm 38 and fluctuate betweeen 235 and 240. I"ve been at that for 5 years now. Diet and lack of exercise are my issues. If you can work out the food habits and get into a good routine with exercise, you'll be smilin'. Good luck and God bless.
