Best thing to do is look for a used model, as any vcr made today is pure junk. I know the Sony models are not bad, especially for the price a lot of high end used models go for now. Something like the SLV-1000 would be a good deck. Or you could go with JVC which love to claim they are the maker of VHS. Their late 90s and early 2000s TOTL HR-S9500, 9600, 9800, 9900 are good models and produce the best picture from tape you will ever see. That is because those models use their 'digipure' processing which is a TBC with digital noise reduction circuitry to clean up the video. I have the 9800 and it has an excellent picture. Keep in mind they do go for a lot of money used today because people are aware of how good those decks are. I won't be selling mine. What you could do is get a D-VHS deck like the HM-D30000 which also has digipure, but go for lower prices. People haven't made the connection those D-VHS decks use the same circuitry as the S-VHS decks like the 9800. Typical used price for a 30000 is between $130 to 200+ dollars and those decks have little use on them because of the format.

True but buying state of the art in this case won't cost you much, mainly because people are dumping vcrs today.
