What's the idea behind the honeycomb design in the footers and the bottom of the chassis?

I would suspect rigididy to combat resonances. Its a neat idea. My deck uses wood on the bottom to do the same thing.

the "HONEYCOMB CHASSIS" design; a PIONEER original invention. first introduced in 1987, and used on most of their products (including my VSX-D1S) until the mid/late 1990s. PIONEER no longer makes any products that feature this design, and we are all the poorer for it...

Well it does make sense, but you usually see the honeycomb design used where lightness and structural integrity are the goal. Something very useful taken from nature.
